About 160,000 asthma attacks in Singapore are expected by 2040, with more people with the condition ending up in hospital each year. A study has found that up to US$77 million could be saved if admission rates are kept at below 40 for every 100,000 people. Dr Lim Hui Fang, visiting consultant at the National University Hospital, and Ms See Weili, an asthma patient, shared more about adult asthma and asthma hospitalisations.
Maximum fines for serious workplace safety breaches will more than double to $50,000 from $20,000, starting next month. The Manpower Ministry said this is a step towards strengthening ownership and accountability, particularly among company leaders responsible for shaping safety culture. Singapore registered a workplace fatality rate of less than one death per 100,000 workers last year. In total, 36 workers died, but the authorities said every life lost is one too many. Richa Mathew reports.
The Housing Development Board is giving homebuyers more room to design their own living spaces. It's introducing a new customisable type of flat in October's Build-To-Order project launch in Kallang-Whampoa. Announcing this at the Pre-U seminar attended by students and educators, National Development Minister Desmond Lee said this flat type may appeal to young couples who wish to have an open-space concept. Claudia Lim reports.
Growing outrage in India, after seven newborn babies were killed in a hospital fire in New Delhi over the weekend. Investigations showed the hospital stayed in operation even though its licence expired two months ago. Officials said it's likely a short circuit started the blaze, and that the presence of flammable oxygen cylinders caused the fire to spread rapidly. The owner of the hospital and the doctor on duty -- who fled when the blaze started -- have been arrested. Neha Poonia reports.
More than 2,000 people could have been buried alive, after a massive landslide struck Papua New Guinea on Friday. UN officials -- who earlier put the toll at over 600 -- said the significantly higher count is an unverified estimate. Only six bodies have been recovered so far. Rain, unstable ground and flowing water has made it extremely difficult to clear debris. Equipment and aid has been slow to arrive due to the remote location of the disaster site. The UN reported that the first excavator only reached the site late on Sunday.
