Singapore will soon be able to fully produce personalised cancer treatment locally. Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca intends to build a S$2-billion facility to manufacture innovative medicine used in cancer treatments. Construction will start by end-2024 and it should be operational by 2029. This marks the first manufacturing investment in Singapore for the Anglo-Swedish company. While the location of the new site has not been announced, AstraZeneca said it will be the first end-to-end production site for such cancer treatment in the world.
Last week, a Philippine convoy launched the biggest-ever display of maritime solidarity in the South China Sea, with an attempt to reach the Scarborough Shoal. Experts said it was part of efforts to assert the Philippines' rights amid China's militarisation of the disputed waters. CNA's Buena Bernal was onboard one of the boats in the convoy.
Mr William Lai has been sworn in as Taiwan's president. In his inauguration speech, he vowed to defend the island's democracy and called on China to cease political and military intimidation. China, which claims sovereignty over Taiwan, has described Mr Lai as a "dangerous separatist". Assistant Professor Dylan Loh from Nanyang Technological University's Public Policy and Global Affairs Division shared more about Mr Lai's inauguration speech and cross-Strait relations.
Taiwan has inaugurated a new president after Tsai Ing-wen of the Democratic Progressive Party passed the baton to her deputy William Lai. The party has won five out of eight presidential elections since the island's democratisation in the 1990s.
Beijing's top diplomat said that Taiwan's internal politics did not change the "fact" it was part of China, calling efforts towards the island's independence "dangerous" after it swore in new President William Lai.

A major change in gun regulation takes effect in the United States on Monday (May 20). After decades of political wrangling, the so-called ‘gun show loophole’, which has allowed firearms to be sold at gun shows and online without a background check, is set to close. The new rule is part of a bipartisan law passed in the wake of a 2022 school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 children and two adults dead. Taiwan’s new President William Lai took office on Monday (May 20) in the face of growing Chinese military pressure and a hostile parliament. Political scientist Raymond Kuo told CNA’s Asia First that China is trying to use a “carrot and stick approach”. On one hand, it is trying to reach out to main opposition party Kuomintang (KMT), which traditionally favours closer ties with China and has gained legislative majority. On the other hand, China is trying to undermine the support of Mr Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), added Mr Kuo, director of the Taiwan Policy Initiative at US-based think tank RAND Corporation. Jakarta is facing serious environmental problems, including water pollution. The lack of access to clean water has forced some residents to buy water from their neighbours who have better access. The capital city currently has about 65 per cent accessibility to clean water, with an ambitious target of 100 per cent by 2030 and the government is speeding up clean water pipeline construction to stop Jakarta from sinking further by curbing groundwater use. Ukraine has ramped up its domestic arms production as its troops face shortages of weapons on the battlefield. The rush to manufacture more arms follows long delays in western military aid as well as expanded Russian military spending which has given Moscow an edge on the battlefield. South Africa has asked a top UN court to order a halt to Israel's ongoing offensive in Rafah - saying Palestinians are facing quote "ongoing annihilation". The country has also accused Israel of carrying out "genocidal" operations in Rafah and other parts of Gaza. The Hague-based International Court of Justice started the two-day hearing with South Africa presenting its case on the first day. Alex Cadier has more details on what transpired at the hearing.
