A study reveals that six in 10 businesses in the Asia Pacific believe they will lose opportunities if they do not pay a bribe, while eight in 10 say giving kickbacks increases their chances of landing plum contracts. The study is by the Association of Chartered Accountants (ACCA), a global body. The study's lead author, Jason Piper from ACCA, discusses the challenges businesses face when it comes to operating in different parts of the world. He also delved deeper into whether corruption is becoming more rampant.
Artificial intelligence is being used to help discharged patients improve their physical rehabilitation process. The system enables patients' therapy to be remotely guided and monitored. Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said the government is working to tackle the rising abuse of new psychoactive substances (NPS) within Singapore. In a radio interview with CNA938, he said while NPS are chemically different from traditional drugs, they still inflict the same harm on abusers and their loved ones. Between 2014 and 2017, 11 people in Singapore were caught abusing NPS. That number jumped to an average of 235 abusers per year over the next four-year period.
The Singapore Institute of Architects has drawn up a new Value Articulation Framework to boost the industry and address issues such as brain drain and low wages. It includes a tool to calculate timelines, as well as the cost of services. This was announced at the 18th Singapore Archifest. It is hoped that this framework will help eradicate "fee-diving", where firms quote well below market rates for tenders. The institute said firms today are doing almost double the work compared to 20 years ago, but they are now pricing their fees three to four times less.
Industrial land developer JTC said the new Punggol Digital District could be the blueprint for future mixed-use properties in Singapore. The 50-hectare district in the northeast is roughly the size of 70 football fields. It is set to open progressively later this year. Within the district, there are cybersecurity, AI, robotics and fintech firms that can help drive the nation's digital economy. The Singapore Institute of Technology will also set up a campus there.
