Palestinian militant group Hamas said on Monday (May 6) evening that it approved a proposal regarding a ceasefire in its seven-month war with Israel, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the proposal was “far from Israel’s essential demands”. Israel then carried out strikes on the Gazan city of Rafah overnight. Ms Merissa Khurma, director of the Middle East Program at US-based think tank Wilson Center, told CNA’s Asia First that the proposal is “emblematic of the back-and-forth” over the past few months and is "very much part of the negotiating process". She added that Israel intends to enter Rafah regardless of an agreement to a deal. Since launching a community auditor programme in 2020, the National Environment Agency (NEA), has been saving 3,000 man-hours a year. Under the programme, residents who live in some private estates help NEA spot-check cleaning routes that the agency oversees, including pavements, drains, roads and bus stops. These residents also keep an eye out for dengue clusters, rat burrows, flood prone areas and littering hotspots. CNA's Rachel Teng reports. A government taskforce to battle dirty public toilets is now in full force. The goal is to improve cleanliness at common toilets, especially those found at coffee shops and hawker centres. The initiative is part of the Year of Public Hygiene campaign. It brings together members of the public and private sectors to improve the hygiene standards of public toilets in the country. The team just held its first meeting, co-chaired by Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and the Environment Baey Yam Keng, and Andrew Khng, who also chairs the Public Hygiene Council.
All-boys school Maris Stella High School is going co-ed. Come 2027, it will welcome girls into its primary school. The Education Ministry said the move would better serve the needs of local residents in the area. When the permanent school site at Mount Vernon Road in Bartley undergoes rebuilding, students will be moved to a holding site at Mattar Road -- the former MacPherson Primary School site. During the transition period, the school will also hold morning and afternoon classes, and return to single-session when the permanent campus is ready in 2030. Claudia Lim reports.
