Myanmar's rebel forces have claimed another victory against the military-run government. It has declared control over Myawaddy, a key town near the Thai border. Around 200 Myanmar military personnel have withdrawn to a bridge connecting the trade hub to Thailand. CNA's May Wong reports from Mae Sot.
Birds are more likely to crash into buildings and die in six areas in Singapore, according to a study. These include Springleaf - with shorter buildings near forests - and Tengah, which incorporates forests into its design. In fact, it is the shorter buildings near greenery that confuse birds. Two types of the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) helicopters - the H225M and the CH-47F - are now fully operational. The Defence Ministry said these will make the RSAF more effective, flexible and capable of meeting operational demands. Despite Singapore's strong relationship with Israel, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said that will not preclude Singapore from taking a principled view on actions by any party in the Middle East, at any point in time. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has vowed to reform state affairs, after his party suffered a crushing defeat in the Apr 10 elections. The main opposition Democratic Party retained its majority in parliament, prompting the head of the People Power Party to step down. The prime minister and senior aides of the party have also offered their resignations to take responsibility for the loss. CNA's Lim Yun Suk has more.
China has accused US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida of "smearing and attacking" Bejiing, after the leaders unveiled plans for deeper defence cooperation during their summit in Washington. Beijing accused them of interfering in its internal affairs, citing issues ranging from Taiwan to maritime security. It added that the two countries should not target and harm other nations' interests, or undermine regional peace and stability. Benji Hyer reports from Washington DC.
In a major setback for Myanmar's military, rebel forces have claimed to have captured a key town near the Thai border. It is the latest in a string of defeats, as the army battles ethnic armed groups on multiple fronts. The Karen National Union, which has long fought against the military, said it has been leading the attack on Myawaddy. The town is a major crossing point for trade with Thailand.
