Chinese President Xi Jinping met with former Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou on Apr 10 in Beijing, a landmark event during which both men urged the peaceful resolution of differences. It is the first time a former leader of Taiwan has been hosted by China's top leader in Beijing, since the Kuomintang fled to Taipei in 1949. It is also the first meeting between Mr Xi and Mr Ma since their historic summit in Singapore in 2015.

Singapore and China have affirmed their "deep and substantive bilateral ties" as the two countries mark key bilateral milestones this year. Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat is in Beijing to further strengthen relations. He met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. From Beijing, Mr Heng will be travelling southwards to visit Shenzhen and Hong Kong, before wrapping up his six-day visit on Friday. Olivia Siong reports.

According to the World Economic Forum, unhealthy workers could cost organisations about $530 billion in annual productivity losses The International SOS foundation has called for more preventive health programmes -- such as flexi-work arrangements -- saying every dollar spent gives a return of around $2.50. Dr David Teo, regional medical director at International SOS, shared more about the challenges facing firms in Singapore. He said how well businesses can adopt flexible arrangements depends on the sector.

The National Trades Union Congress is proposing making flexible working arrangements official at the workplace. This is the first time NTUC has issued such recommendations, aimed at making it easier for employees to request flexible working arrangements. The report also highlights the need for supervisors to be ready in managing employees' expectations. NTUC is also suggesting a review of essential job requirements and outcomes for flexible working arrangements to be effective.

Singapore has rolled out its biggest installation of solar panels for shopping malls. When completed by end-2024, the project will save about $220,000 in annual energy costs. But the energy generated will only supply 2% of the power needs of the participating buildings. The project involves six malls and one commercial building in the Alexandra Technopark, all managed by Frasers Property. This is part of a long-standing partnership with SP Group to support Singapore's drive towards net-zero. Marcus Tan reports.

Europe's top rights court has ruled that Switzerland did not do enough to tackle climate change. It's the first time the European Court of Human Rights has ruled against a state on the issue. The court ruled in favour of a group of Swiss elderly women, who argued that the inadequacy of their government to combat climate change had put them at risk of dying during heatwaves. The court also agreed that the Swiss government had violated some human rights by missing past targets on emission reductions. Ishan Garg reports from Brussels.
