The Chinese property crisis will not go away anytime soon, and Standard Chartered’s losses in China due to the downturn in the real estate market there was “quite painful” but “not outsized at all”, said the bank’s CEO Bill Winters. In fact, StanChart doubled its operating profits in China in the past two years, and generated US$1.4 billion in profits last year, he said. Standard Chartered is forecasting that Bitcoin prices could reach US$250,000 next year, with its CEO Bill Winters telling CNA in an exclusive interview that there is potential for cryptocurrency to be well-regulated. He added that he can see the entire financial infrastructure shifting from the current form of securities and mutual, to different types of tokens. The bank’s “unquestioned” compliance also means people have been “flooding” into its cryptocurrency ventures, but Mr Winters said criminals do not go to StanChart because they will not get an account. Rosmah Mansor seen at Malaysian courts as Najib seeks to serve remaining sentence under house arrest
Rosmah Mansor, wife of former Malaysia PM Najib Razak, was seen at court on Thursday (Apr 4) as her husband filed for a judicial review to serve out the rest of his 6-year prison term under house arrest.

Kallang Alive Sport Management has said it will make top-tier events accessible to all groups in Singapore. These include persons with disabilities and those from lower-income families, among others. After a 20-year hiatus, the ASEAN Club Championship is making a comeback in July, with a new sponsor on board. The regional football tournament was last held in 2005. It was cancelled due to a lack of sponsors and plans to revive it in 2019 were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The revived competition is supported by e-commerce platform Shopee. Called the Shopee Cup, it will feature 12 domestic league champions or Cup winners from Southeast Asian nations. Alif Amsyar reports.
The National University of Singapore has a fourth research institute in China. The latest in Guangzhou will help commercialise research breakthroughs. Professor Hang Chang Chieh, emeritus deputy president and president advisor of the institute, and Professor Meng Qiang, director of the institute, shared more about the new NUS-Guangzhou Research Translation and Innovation Institute (NUSGRTII).
Four land parcels have been awarded for vegetable farming in Lim Chu Kang and Sungei Tengah. They are part of efforts to support Singapore's goal to produce 30% of its nutritional needs by 2030. Some 70% of plots launched over the last seven years have been taken up. The Singapore Food Agency said the winning proposals will use productive and innovative farming methods. The farms will also have eco-friendly features, such as solar panels, smart lighting and integrated waste management systems. Rebecca Metteo reports.
Calls for an acceleration in developing capacities for renewable energy -- such as solar and wind -- in Southeast Asia. This includes building more infrastructure to tap these resources. A recent study has shown that there needs to be seven to 12 times more investment in the region for countries to achieve their net-zero emission goals between 2050 and 2060. The study was conducted by Singapore's Economic Development Board and led by management consultant firm McKinsey. One challenge cited was the pace at which regulations move.
US President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are set to hold their first phone conversation since the death of seven aid workers from the World Central Kitchen in Gaza. Mr Biden has already voiced frustration over the impact Israeli operations have had on civilians in Gaza. The attack, which Israel said was a mistake, adds to international pressure already growing on Mr Netanyahu. Myanmar's civilian National Unity Government and its armed wing have claimed responsibility for drone attacks on two military bases in the country's capital city Nay Pyi Taw. If confirmed, this would be one of their most significant offensives against the military, which seized power in 2021. The Myanmar army said there had been no casualties, but local media reported at least two soldiers have been killed and 15 others injured. Leong Wai Kit reports.
Former Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak is trying to get out of jail through a judicial application. He has claimed that former king Sultan Abdullah, in issuing a partial pardon, had wanted him to serve his remaining sentence under house arrest. The pardons board had previously halved Najib’s sentence to six years and slashed his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million. Najib is to be released from prison in August 2028. It has also raised concerns about Pyongyang supplying ballistic missiles to Moscow. A day on from Taiwan's 7.2-magnitude earthquake, the death toll has risen to 10, with the latest victim found on a hiking trail. 38 people remain missing or uncontactable. The island's eastern region has been shaken by hundreds of aftershocks since the quake. Dozens of missing vacationers and workers from Taroko National Park have been brought to a temporary medical station after being rescued. About 600 people remain stranded at a hotel in the same park, but are safe. Victoria Jen reports live from Hualien.
