Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority has said that the container ship that collided with a bridge in Baltimore had passed previous inspections. It said the vessel "Dali" had valid certification covering its structural integrity, as well as the functionality of its equipment. The authority said the "Dali" passed two separate foreign port state inspections in June and September last year. In the June inspection, a faulty monitor gauge for fuel pressure was rectified before the vessel departed. The ship's next classification and statutory surveys are due this June.

Power loss, blackouts, smoke, then impact. We take a look at the few minutes before the Singapore-flagged ship Dali collided into a bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday (Mar 26), where six workers are presumed dead after the collapse.
The destroyed Baltimore bridge will take at least three to five years to be rebuilt, given the scale of the damage, Professor Jean-Paul Rodrigue, who specialises in maritime business administration at Texas A&M University at Galveston, tells CNA’s Asia First. The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which opened in 1977, had collapsed on Tuesday (Mar 26) after being struck by Singapore-flagged container ship Dali. The rebuild could be sped up if there is less bureaucratic red tape and is perceived as a project of national significance, says Prof Rodrigue. While national infrastructure typically meet the safety standards of their time, the increasing size of vessels over the decades calls for fresh considerations for ports and waterways, civil and structural engineer Julian Carter tells CNA’s World Tonight. The Francis Scott Key Bridge, which opened in 1977, had collapsed on Tuesday (Mar 26) after being struck by a Singapore-flagged container ship. The accident will make many ports, harbours and governments reassess the strength of their own structures, says Mr Carter, director of British firm By Julian Limited.
