Education Minister Chan Chun Sing has assured social science researchers that there is recognition for their work, if it improves Singaporean's quality of life. He was speaking at the Ideas Festival, where autonomous universities came together to put the spotlight on local social sciences and humanities research. Singapore has been ranked Asia's happiest country for the second year in a row, according to the 2024 World Happiness Report. The country ranked the 30th happiest out of 143 places surveyed, but that's five positions lower than from a year ago. The countries were rated according to six factors: GDP per capita, social support networks, healthy life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, charity donations, and perceptions of corruption. Finland topped the global list for the seventh straight year, followed closely by Denmark and Iceland.
A study has found that nearly one in five children in Singapore are leading consistently unhealthy lifestyles. This means they are three times more likely to get pre-hypertension and higher diastolic blood pressure. The 'Growing Up in Singapore Towards Healthy Outcomes' (GUSTO) study, tracked 546 children across three milestones -- at ages two, five and eight -- and their lifestyle patterns. Children in the consistently unhealthy group were less active, had higher screen time, ate fewer fruits and vegetables, but loved ultra-processed food. Senior Research Fellow Chia Airu and Associate Professor Mary Chong from the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health discussed the findings.
The digital economy is a new frontier where Singapore hopes to seek closer collaboration with China. Senior Minister Teo Chee Hean said this during a visit to Zhejiang -- an economic powerhouse on China's eastern coast. He is on a week-long tour of China. Hangzhou, the provincial capital of Zhejiang, is the birthplace of Chinese tech giant Alibaba and a major hub for e-commerce. Located next to the city's largest university zone is the Singapore-Hangzhou Science and Technology Park. Singapore's bilateral trade with Zhejiang province grew over 10% last year.
