Donors, charities and other organisations are being brought together under a new initiative to boost support for lower-income families. The goal is to harness the resources of the philanthropic sector and the expertise of non-profits to complement government efforts.
Singapore wants to harness the power of the arts to boost the well-being of its people, and it's starting with the elderly. The National Arts Council will kick off a study later this year to examine and test the impact of art-based programmes on people's well-being. The pilot will begin with art practitioners at SingHealth community hospitals.
Self-employed art practitioners, such as instructors and artists who work gigs or freelance, will get more support to access training and development resources. The National Arts Council is creating more training paths for these self-employed persons to help them hone their profession and improve the stability of their careers. Up to one-third of Singapore's arts workforce -- or about 7,000 people -- are self-employed.
Parliament has passed a new bill that will give the Monetary Authority of Singapore wider investigative and supervisory powers over the financial sector, such as the ability to enter premises without a warrant and without giving prior notice -- if certain conditions are met. While MPs said the moves would strengthen trust in the financial system, they also voiced concerns that such power could be misused.

Elsewhere in the precinct, two new state-of-the-art facilities, the Kallang Tennis Hub and the Kallang Football Hub, will both open this year. Alif Amsyar reports.

Over 46,000 scam cases were reported in Singapore in 2023, with the total losses amounting to over S$650 million. Aslam Shah reports.
According to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, global sea temperatures hit a record high of 21.1°C in February. It was also the hottest February on record -- the ninth consecutive month to set its own monthly record. An El Nino climate pattern this year, fueled by warmer surface waters in the Eastern Pacific, is driving extra heat. The soaring mercury levels risk causing mass coral bleaching across the world and the death of other marine life.
United States President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump dominated their respective Super Tuesday races, clearing the path to a replay of the 2020 election. Polls have shown that the historic rematch is one that few Americans are excited about, which could lead to a poor turnout come November. Both candidates must now gear up for a long campaign in the race to the White House, University of Chicago’s Professor Emeritus of political science Charles Lipson tells CNA’s Asia First. Former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley has bowed out of the GOP presidential nomination race, after former president Donald Trump defeated her in nearly all states up for grabs on Super Tuesday. She said it is now up to Trump to earn the votes of Republicans who did not support him. However, analysts expect Haley to eventually endorse Trump, in part to secure a brighter political future for herself. Professor Richard Mullaney, executive director of Jacksonville University’s Public Policy Institute, tells CNA’s World Tonight why both Trump and Haley are likely to make peace with each other.
