Singapore's largest network for electric vehicle (EV) charging Charge+ will fine users who overstay at some popular charging spots from next quarter, in an effort to deter hogging and reduce waiting time. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the arrangement to bring Taylor Swift to Singapore has been successful and was not "unfriendly" to other countries. Singapore had provided a grant to bring the US superstar to the city state, but the move raised questions in Thailand and the Philippines, with one MP calling it "unneighbourly". Mr Lee was asked about the issue during a news conference in Australia, where he had been attending a leaders' meeting.
Personnel from the Republic of Singapore Air Force had a closer look at how the F-35A fighter jet is flown by US operators. The US Air Force pilots and ground crew are in Singapore for a bilateral training. The insights gained will be useful when eight F-35As join the RSAF fleet around 2030. Aslam Shah reports.
Singapore will spend another S$1 billion over the next decade to make neighbourhoods safer and more convenient for walking and commuting. This includes making infrastructure more suitable for young families and the elderly. The Transport Ministry hopes to encourage more people to turn to sustainable forms of getting around, and make neighbourhoods more liveable. In South Korea, medical school professors and physicians at several hospitals have joined striking junior doctors to protest against the government’s plan to increase medical school admissions. At the same time, authorities have started notifying trainee doctors about the suspension of their medical licences, as the government begins to punish physicians for walking out of their jobs. The strike by about 9,000 junior doctors has entered its third week, with no signs of a breakthrough as the doctors and the government remain defiant in their demands. Lim Yun Suk reports from Seoul.
Singapore and Australia are exploring doing more in the areas of artificial intelligence and air connectivity, ahead of a milestone in diplomatic ties next year. The countries will mark the 10th anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Agreement and six decades of diplomatic relations next year. This comes amid what’s been described as "groundbreaking areas of cooperation", including a set of principles to guide the roll out of cross-border electricity trade. Vietnam has opened a trial today into the country's largest financial fraud case. According to allegations, it involves a $12-billion embezzlement scam and fraudulent loans of up to $40 billion at a Vietnamese commercial bank. At the centre of the case are Vietnamese real-estate tycoon Truong My Lan and her husband, Hong Kong billionaire Eric Chu Nap-kee. More than 80 other defendants are also facing trial, and could face death penalties if convicted. Tung Ngo reports.
Chinese leaders have vowed to step up efforts to tackle unemployment. The country aims to create about 12 million new urban jobs this year. Premier Li Qiang said the government will take a multi-pronged approach to create jobs and boost income. Farmers in India are planning to expand their protest, with calls by union leaders for them to march to capital New Delhi on Wednesday (Mar 6). This will not be their first attempt. Farmers in the state of Punjab have been protesting for a month, and tried to get to the capital before, but were stopped by police and paramilitary forces at the border. Those involved are demanding better prices for their crops but several rounds of talks with the government have failed.
