Singapore is doubling down on investments to grow global leaders from its local talent pool, and boost collaboration between larger and smaller firms. For example, the new Global Business Leaders Programme (GBLP) gives Singaporean middle to senior managers who are nominated by their companies the opportunity to take on overseas postings. These are part of longer-term efforts to tap on global opportunities and achieve economic growth, even as foreign direct investments reached S$2.9 trillion last year. Nadirah Zaidi reports.
The introduction of a new Digital Infrastructure Act is being studied to make key digital infrastructure more secure and resilient against disruptions. This, especially for sectors like banking and healthcare. A government taskforce is looking into the matter, following major outages last year involving DBS, Citibank and some online government services. Communications and Information Minister Josephine Teo said disruptions to such critical infrastructure can cause significant impact to the economy and society.
Singapore will invest up to S$500 million into high performance computing hardware to support artificial intelligence innovation. The government has announced a slew of measures to help local companies reap the benefits of AI. Small companies can tap them to adopt AI-enabled software, while enterprises now have access to a new scheme that pairs them with tech giants to develop generative AI solutions. Nicolas Ng reports.
New research and academic programmes, as well as funding for training, will be rolled out to grow Singapore's AI talent pool. Singapore intends to grow its pool of AI talent to 15,000 over the next five years. It's rolling out a new accelerated Masters programme with local universities. According to the International Energy Agency's latest report, global emissions of carbon dioxide hit a record high last year. IEA analysis revealed carbon emissions increased by 1.1% in 2023, but the trend has slowed from previous years, thanks to increasing use of green energy. China remains the biggest emitter -- responsible for 35% of global carbon output. The US trails behind at around 12%, while India has surpassed the European Union to become the world's third-largest emitter.

Three preschool teachers suspended this week over allegations of child mistreatment have been barred from working in the sector while investigations are ongoing. The Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) said this is to ensure the children's safety. The allegations involve accounts of a three-year-old being locked in a dark room. He was reportedly struck, pinched and yelled at by his teachers. The name of the preschool is being withheld to protect the child's identity.
Singapore will dedicate the third Friday of every May as Drug Victims Remembrance Day. Schools and institutes of higher learning will organise various activities to spread the message on the ills of drug addiction to youths.
