South Korea and Japan have been moving to beef up their military export trade, and their intentions are on prominent display at the ongoing Singapore Airshow. Defence equipment makers from the countries are expected to showcase their products and systems to more than 50,000 attendees from around the world at the six-day event, which will end this week. CNA's Lauren Ong has more details.
From April, experienced buskers will have permits with a longer validity before re-auditioning to renew it. The National Arts Council's new protocol applies to experienced performers who have passed two auditions within the last four years. They will also get more access to busking spots at popular locations. Clara Lee reports.
Additional support to help Singapore's arts sector transform is expected when Parliament sits next month. According to the National Arts Council, so far, 40 organisations have signed up for an existing fund that provides each of them with up to $200,000 to improve their prospects. One theatre group is using it to turn Pulau Ubin into a destination for sustainable art-lovers and tourists, while a Chinese opera troupe is looking to go mainstream.
The aviation sector is facing a manpower crunch. Airlines in the Asia-Pacific region are offering higher salaries and better benefits to retain pilots and attract new ones. There has been a shortage of pilots after a halt in hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysts said airlines will have to get innovative until the manpower pool is built up. Air travel in the Asia-Pacific is expected to fully recover by 1H2024. Jeraldine Yap reports.
Although sustainable aviation fuel is a pathway to net-zero emission, it still emits carbon dioxide. Another greener way to power planes with absolutely zero emissions is by using hydrogen. In fact, hydrogen packs about three times the amount of energy per unit of mass than conventional jet fuel. Mr Shantanu Gangakhedkar, a senior consultant from Frost & Sullivan, shared more about using hydrogen fuel and aviation decarbonisation.
Fewer university graduates in Singapore managed to secure jobs within six months of graduating in 2023. However, median salaries for those who work full-time went up to above $4,300 -- about $100 more compared to the previous year. The health sciences, information and digital technologies, and business clusters recorded the highest full-time permanent employment rates. This, according to an annual joint survey conducted by four local universities with more than 12,000 participants.
G20 Western foreign ministers have reportedly scored Russia for its nearly three-year war in Ukraine. The bloc's discussions in Brazil have so far mostly focused on the conflict in Ukraine and Gaza. In a closed session, major world powers are said to have demanded accountability by Moscow for its aggression. China has condemned a delegation visit by US officials to Taiwan, urging Washington to stop interfering in the island's affairs. Mr Mike Gallagher - chairman of the House of Representatives select committee on China - arrived in Taipei, along with four other lawmakers. The group met with Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President William Lai Ching-te during the visit. The delegation is expected to stay until Saturday as part of a larger visit to the Indo-Pacific region. Low Minmin reports from Shanghai.
