Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam on Sunday (Feb 4) paid tribute to the late Wee Cho Yaw, UOB’s former chairman, saying he “contributed greatly to Singapore”. Mr Wee was “one of a kind” and he was deeply interested in culture, said Mr Tharman at Mr Wee's wake. The banking tycoon died aged 95, Singapore bank UOB announced on Saturday. He was at the helm of UOB for more than 60 years before he retired in 2018. More public sector construction projects will come under the Safety Disqualification Framework, which bars companies with poor safety records from taking part in tenders. Come April, the framework will apply to the main contractor of projects worth between over $90,000 and $1 million. For those above $1 million, it will apply to all contractors involved. Currently, this framework only applies to projects worth $3 million or more. More weightage will also be placed when assessing a company's safety history in evaluating and selecting contractors. Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal will undergo a S$20-million revamp this year. Passengers can expect shorter wait times, automated check-in lanes and an outdoor play area for children. Singapore's manufacturing activity in January was at its highest in more than two years. The Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) improved 0.2 points to 50.7, marking five consecutive months of expansion. The growth was led by faster expansion in key indices like new orders, new exports and input purchases. Performance was dragged down by slower growth in factory output and employment.
