Indian restaurants in Singapore have been better able to meet festive demand this year, following support to hire more specialised cooks. It has been a year since such restaurants were allowed to hire cooks from India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka on work permits. Still, in the long run, they are hoping that rules can be relaxed further to bring in more foreign manpower. The Manpower Ministry added Indian cooks to the non-traditional sources occupation list in March last year. 400 Indian cuisine restaurants tapped the work permit in the first three months it was rolled out.

Singapore swimmers competing at the World Cup on home turf said the experience gives them crucial exposure and confidence in the lead-up to an important year. Come 2025, the World Championships in July will also be held in Singapore, while Thailand will host the SEA Games in December. The three-day event, which runs until Saturday, will see more than 450 swimmers from 38 countries in action at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Alif Amsyar reports.

Jurong Island's upcoming hydrogen-ready power plant represents a major step-up in Singapore's sustainability efforts. It will generate 600 megawatts of cleaner energy, with one-third less carbon emissions than natural gas. Energy supplier YTL PowerSeraya has invested S$800 million in the new plant, which is expected to be ready by end-2027. YTL PowerSeraya, added that its effectiveness relies on cooperation among different jurisdictions, which is vital for building the necessary systems to support green hydrogen use. Some ornamental fish farms in Singapore are embracing new technology to lower costs and improve breeding. Some smaller players have exited the scene due to uncertainty over land leases. Singapore's biggest farm, Qian Hu, is pioneering a new system to breed freshwater fish like guppies and goldfish. Millions of people are marking the Hindu festival of Deepavali, or Diwali. It's seen as the most important festival of the year for Hindus, symbolising the victory of light over darkness. But celebrations in India's capital New Delhi have taken place beneath a thick layer of smog. Officials warned air quality might worsen, if residents continue to defy a ban on firecrackers. Some have said the ban is an insult to Hindu traditions, while others have called it a case of government overreach. In the past few days, New Delhi police have seized 19,000kg of firecrackers. Ahead of the US election next week, a US judge has ordered Elon Musk and other parties to attend a court hearing in Philadelphia, in relation to a lawsuit seeking to block the tech billionaire's $1 million-a-day giveaways to voters in swing states. Mr Musk had promised to give that sum of money to any individual who signs his online free speech and gun rights petition. The Philadelphia district attorney's office called the handouts an "illegal lottery". The richest man in the world is Mr Trump's biggest donor, and has contributed at least $132 million to the former president's campaign. Nick Harper reports.

Senior US officials are set to meet their Israeli counterparts today, in a renewed push to secure ceasefires for Lebanon and Gaza wars. Washington is reportedly working on a 60-day truce between Israel and Hezbollah. Lebanese caretaker prime minister Najib Mikati has expressed optimism for a potential ceasefire in the "next few hours or days". However, a senior Hamas official said the group rejects any proposal for a temporary halt in fighting in Gaza and insists on a permanent end to the war. Sarah Coates reports from Tel Aviv.

North Korea has fired what is said to be its longest-ever ballistic missile test, drawing ire from Washington, Seoul and Tokyo. What appeared to be a new type of solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) was fired towards the East Sea. South Korea condemned the launch and announced new export controls on materials needed to produce solid-fuel missiles. It also conducted large-scale joint air exercises with US forces in the Yellow Sea. Lim Yun Suk reports.

Typhoon Kong-rey has made landfall in Taiwan, claiming at least one life and injuring dozens more. While the storm has been downgraded from a super typhoon, intense wind and rain caused a near-shutdown of the island. Schools and offices were shut, while hundreds of local and international flights and ferry services were grounded. Kong-rey is the biggest to land since 1996, with a radius of 320km -- almost big enough to engulf all of Taiwan. Conditions are expected to remain severe until early tomorrow. Victoria Jen reports.

A report on the best workplaces in Singapore has shown that leadership integrity and employee well-being are growing in importance. Psychological safety -- where it is okay for employees to take risks, express ideas and concerns without the fear of negative consequences -- is also an evolving need. The survey is based on inputs from 440,000 employees across nearly 1,000 workplaces since 2015. This year's 'Great Place to Work' has introduced a new 'legends' category, which recognises six firms who have been on the list of best workplaces in Singapore for at least five consecutive years.
