Ridding the world’s oceans of plastic requires efforts to stop more of it from getting into the water, and also to clean up what is already out there. The largest accumulation of plastic at sea currently is in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, in the North Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and California. Non-profit organisation The Ocean Cleanup is attempting to clear up the area, using a huge 2.5km long U-shaped floating barrier to sweep a space the size of a football field every five seconds, and detecting the main clusters of plastic with advanced computer modelling. If all goes well, the firm could clean up the entire patch in about 10 years, CEO and founder Boyan Slat tells CNA’s Asia Now. Veterinary clinics in Singapore have had to increase their fees by up to 20 per cent over the last two years, due to rising medical supplies and manpower costs, industry players said. A severe shortage of vets, both in the country and globally, has also made it challenging for them to hire and retain talent, despite offering higher salaries. As pet ownership continues to grow in Singapore, vets are calling for more to be done to support the sector. CNA’s Claudia Lim reports.
