Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is on a four-nation tour of Africa, said China is deeply concerned about the sharp rise in attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea. In a seeming rebuke of a US-UK joint strike against the Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen last week, Mr Wang noted that the UN Security Council has not authorised any country to use force against Yemen, and warned against any action that will raise security risks in the region. Taiwan has lost another diplomatic ally, just two days after William Lai won the presidential election. The small Pacific Island nation of Nauru has severed relations with Taipei to re-establish formal ties with Beijing. Nauru said it would no longer recognise Taiwan as a separate country, but as an inalienable part of China. That leaves just 12 countries with formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
