Most Singaporeans prefer to die at home, but only three in 10 of them know what palliative care is about. A survey conducted by local non-profit Lien Foundation on more than 1,000 adult Singaporeans highlighted common misconceptions and barriers towards palliative care. CNA speaks to Associate Professor Alethea Yee, Director of Education at the Lien Centre for Palliative Care, and a Senior Consultant at the National Cancer Centre. She talks about Singapore's current palliative care capabilities, training for healthcare professionals and how the Government will need to adapt to changing health needs. Also weighing in is Dr Neo Han Yee, Head of Department and Senior Consultant of Palliative Medicine at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. He talks about what palliative care entails, convincing patients and caregivers to begin palliative care earlier, and how realistic it is for healthcare professionals to take on palliative care responsibilities.
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong says that ASEAN will remain a cornerstone of Singapore's foreign policy. Addressing fellow leaders at the ASEAN Summit for the first time as PM, Mr Wong raised the importance of developing the region for its people and external partners. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has dissolved the Lower House of the Diet, setting the stage for an election on Oct 27. The move comes just about a week after Mr Ishiba was sworn in as premier. It marks the shortest time period between a prime minister taking office and his dissolving of the Lower House since the end of World War II. Dr Lee Wei Ling, the daughter of Singapore's founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew, died on Wednesday (Oct 9) at the age of 69. Dr Lee died at home, according to a Facebook post by her brother Mr Lee Hsien Yang. Dr Lee was also the sister of Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who said in a Facebook post: "I will deeply miss Ling. Boats that ply Singapore's open waters will get a clearer picture of how to go electric earliest by the end of year, when maritime authorities release a set of approved designs. It's hoped that these will scale up manufacturing quickly and cheaply. By 2030, all new harbour craft must be electric or run on low-carbon fuels. Harbour craft are vessels that don't venture beyond Singapore waters, such as boats that ferry people to neighbouring islands like Pulau Ubin. Meanwhile, experts said vessels will need more places to juice up. So far, there's only one public charger at Marina South Pier. Claudia Lim reports.
Researchers in Singapore will collect data for 15 months to study the long-term impact an oil spill in June will have on marine ecology. The National Parks Board will work with three research institutions. The team will monitor key biodiversity areas and species of interest. National Development Minister Desmond Lee said the data will be used to suggest ways to protect and restore key habitats. Rachel Teng reports.
