Many in Southeast Asia have found themselves resonating with different aspects of the Israel-Hamas conflict. In a survey conducted by the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute this year, nearly 47% of respondents from Southeast Asia identified the war as their top geopolitical concern, putting it ahead of South China Sea tensions. While the majority of ASEAN countries condemned Hamas' Oct 7 attack on Israel, only the Philippines, Singapore and Cambodia designated Hamas as a terrorist group. Around a third of respondents expressed fear that a rise in extremist activity could impact regional security.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to bring back all the hostages still held by Hamas, as the war in Gaza hits the one-year mark. Tens of thousands of Israeli and Palestinian lives have been lost in the past 12 months. The goals of an eventual deal remain unchanged: End the fighting, bring hostages home and stop the killing of civilians. Israel has held multiple events across the country to mark the day. A year of constant bombardments has killed 42,000 people and damaged or destroyed nearly 60% of buildings in Gaza. Trent Murray reports from Tel Aviv.
As the war in Gaza crosses a grim milestone, shadows of destruction, death and despair hang over the embattled strip. In Singapore, some 8,000km away, charity groups are continuing to ramp up relief efforts for Gaza. The Rahmatan Lil Alamin Foundation has kicked off its third and longest fundraiser, while the Singapore Red Cross is training more volunteers and working with its overseas counterparts.
