Singapore is working on new laws against domestic violence and extending protection for persons in close non-familial relationships. An inaugural report by the Social and family Development Ministry showed a rise in child and spousal abuse cases since 2021. The number of 'low-moderate risk' child abuse cases rose in 2023. Authorities said this is in part due to greater awareness and training to identify early signs of abuse. Meanwhile, higher-risk cases saw a slight drop since 2021.

In total, 34 rail breaks have been found across 1.6 kilometres of tracks between Clementi and Dover stations on the East-West Line. These rail breaks pose safety risks if left unrepaired. Associate Professor Raymond Ong, deputy head of research and enterprise at the NUS Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, spoke about the complexities involved in repairing the damage.
Singapore's transport authorities aim to restore full service on the East-West Line on Monday. Earlier, they had intended to restore service on one track between Jurong East and Buona Vista to provide a shuttle train. That will no longer happen to speed up repairs toward full recovery. It all started when a train over 35 years old became faulty and returned to Ulu Pandan depot. On its way, one of its parts fell off near Dover. The wheels came off the running rail, cracking the track in 34 places. By the time it was noticed something was wrong, the damage was spread across 1.6 kilometres toward Clementi. Meantime, all the other first-generation trains have been inspected for the same part that fell off. There are 48 such trains running on the North-South and East-West lines. Richa Mathew reports.
