Over 400 children from welfare homes in Malaysia have been rescued by authorities after allegations of abuse surfaced. Malaysian police raided 18 welfare homes in Selangor and two in Negeri Sembilan on Sep 11. Over 170 people including caretakers, ustaz (religious teachers) and the chairmen of the premises have been arrested.

The world's largest light, sound and multimedia event - illumi - is making its international debut in Singapore on Sep 13. Hailing from Canada, it will be located beside Marina Bay Sands at the Bayfront Event Space from Sep 13. Twenty million LED lights span a 47-metre-tall tree, as well as nine themed landscapes that are a visual sight and interactive - which organisers say is safe to do so as the power used is one-ninth of usual displays. It has events planned all the way till Chinese New Year. Clemens Choy reports.
Singapore has an additional medical team that can be activated during emergencies and disasters. Once the team arrives on site, it can offer services like those found at hospitals. These include managing trauma injuries and even maternal care. Aslam Shah caught up with the team in action.

Singapore has been hailed by Pope Francis as an example of how different ethnicities, cultures and religions can co-exist in harmony. This is especially in a time of conflicts raging around the world. He made the comment during a state address at the University Cultural Centre. About 50,000 people gathered at the National Stadium on Sep 12 to attend the first papal mass in Singapore since 1986. Pope Francis delivered the homily at the mass and partook in holy communion amid a sea of people clad in yellow and white - the colours of the Vatican flag.

Spotted lanternflies, which are native to China and Vietnam, have become an invasive species in other parts of the world including Japan, South Korea and the United States. They have now spread to 17 US states – and while experts say they are harmless to humans, they pose a danger to crops such as apples, blueberries, grapes and hops.
