A sightseeing train in Japan connecting Tokyo and Saitama prefecture will offer passengers a taste of Singaporean cuisine from January. The Singapore-themed train, where they will be served Singaporean culinary delights while enjoying the changing seasonal scenery of Japan from their window, will run for three months. The tie-up between Seibu Railway and Singapore Tourism Board (STB) seeks to promote awareness of rural Japan to visitors, while encouraging more Japanese to travel to Singapore. A new training programme aims to teach life skills to autistic adults over 18 years old. This is the first initiative in a joint partnership by Temasek Foundation, Autism Resource Centre and The Purple Parade that seeks to address the situation where support services drop off sharply as autistic students graduate from special education schools. An annual mental health survey has shown that there has been a 15 per cent increase in those willing to seek help. There is also a 22 per cent rise in those willing to support and hire people with such conditions. More than 400 respondents took part in the study by Beyond the Label, a national mental health movement. There are plans to engage schools next. Rachel Teng reports.
The Manpower Ministry will give more detailed guidelines and information to help firms with outdoor workers cope with heat stress. Some of these include the frequency of measures like rest and hydration and the conditions when workers must be redeployed indoors. Some employers have even introduced extra measures like providing online resources about heat stress for their workers.
Singapore will expand Changi Airport’s network from 150 destination cities to over 200 by the mid-2030s. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said this is one of the ways the country can stay ahead amid fierce competition in the global aviation sector. Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday (Sep 5) pledged more than US$50 billion in funding for Africa over the next three years, including US$140 million in military aid. Bates Gill, senior fellow for Asian security at American think tank National Bureau of Asian Research, noted that China’s assistance includes training and exchanges for military and law enforcement personnel, as well as more security-related exports to Africa.
