Seven-time Paralympic gold medalist Yip Pin Xiu said Singapore needs a mindset shift on how its society views people with disabilities, in order to produce more champions like herself. This would also require a cultural change from Singaporeans to start seeing sports as a viable career path. She was speaking to CNA's Sabrina Ng in Paris, where she reflected on her 20-year swimming career.
Singapore's Temasek Foundation said its mangrove restoration efforts in Indonesia have produced promising results. More than 15 hectares of mangroves -- the size of about 21 football fields -- have been planted in Banyuasin regency, South Sumatra. The project, which started three years ago, funds the local community to start a mangrove nursery enterprise. Locals collect mangrove seedlings from the wild and sell them to companies involved in the restoration programme. Indonesia is home to more than three million hectares of mangrove forests. Singapore will welcome Pope Francis next week. Thousands of souvenirs have been sold in fundraising efforts for the Catholic community. From T-shirts and hats to tote bags, all proceeds will go towards the Pope Francis Singapore Fund to support the papal visit here. Each official souvenir is marked with a tag or label, so people can identify it as an authentic product. The committee will also roll out limited edition items for the papal mass. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said Singapore's relations with India are revving up and both sides will be better for it. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat said the next phase of partnership between Singapore and India will require deeper understanding and strengthened trust. He was speaking at the inaugural Singapore-India Forum, which brought together researchers and business leaders from both sides. Dr Karthik Nachiappan, a research fellow at the Institute of South Asian Studies, shared more about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official visit to Singapore.
Well-known undertaker Roland Tay has been fined $12,000 and ordered to pay about $530,000 in penalties for tax offences. He pleaded guilty to four charges relating to income, and Goods and Services taxes. The 77-year-old had made incorrect tax returns across three years, resulting in tax on income of over $250,000 being undercharged. Investigations also found that he failed to register for Goods and Services Tax that would have amounted to over $280,000. In mitigation, Tay's lawyers cited his poor health. They also said he was lowly-educated with no knowledge of financial matters and had entrusted the bookkeeping for some of his business to an employee. Aslam Shah reports.

Intel is said to have slowed down construction of its new chip-packaging and testing project in Penang. Unconfirmed reports stated that the US chip giant plans to cut its workforce by 15 per cent. Medical professionals looking to learn and train in surgical robots and AI can now do so at a newly opened space. It is part of an expansion of healthcare tech firm Medtronic's existing experience centre, which gives medical professionals access to new technologies. Since the centre's opening two years ago, it has trained more than 2,000 healthcare professionals to use emerging tech. The medical technology industry in Asia Pacific is expected to grow to $290 billion by 2030. Muhammad Bahajjaj reports.
The 2025 President's Challenge will provide long-term funding of up to three or five years, instead of the current one-off model. This will give benefiting organisations time to grow or even be self-sustaining. The refreshed annual campaign will be extended to include the arts and sports fields, especially among those less advantaged. Architects and engineering consultants are getting career support from a new taskforce. The Taskforce for Architectural and Engineering Consultants will look into issues the industry is facing and aims to strengthen the built environment sector. The taskforce is also hoping to draw more talent into the industry while ensuring competitive salaries. Speaking at this year's International Built Environment Week, National Development Minister Desmond Lee also outlined plans to bridge the gap faced by architects and engineering consultants.
Singapore will offer vaccines to healthcare workers who are at greatest risk of encountering mpox. The vaccines -- which are from the country's existing stock for smallpox -- will also be offered to close contacts of confirmed cases. However, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung said there are no plans to elevate Singapore's response further. That's as its people can manage what he described as a "troublesome virus", due to experiences gained from the COVID-19 pandemic. Thailand's king has endorsed the new cabinet of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. The new cabinet has 35 ministers -- maxing out the legal limit -- coming from seven different parties. Many key portfolios are keeping their ministers, especially the ones important to the ruling Pheu Thai Party, such as finance, commerce, transport and tourism. This marks the end of three weeks of political uncertainty, after the dismissal of Ms Shinawatra's predecessor Srettha Thavisin.
