Singapore's men's national football team will not play any friendly matches during the upcoming international windows in September and October. That's despite the Lions needing to prepare for the ASEAN Championships (AFF) in December. To prepare for the region's top football tournament, head coach Tsutomu Ogura is opting for closed-door training games. He said this approach will give his players more time in training and to bond. As a final tune-up for the AFF in November, Singapore will spar against Myanmar and Chinese Taipei at the National Stadium.
Daniel Chan is Singapore's first para-shooter to compete in the Paralympics. An accident at birth affected the nerves in Chan's left hand, but that didn't stop him from pursuing his dreams. In 2022, he placed fourth at the World Shooting Para Sport World Cup in Changwon. A year later at the Hangzhou Asian Para Games, he missed out on a medal but earned a ticket to Paris. The French capital Paris has undergone a €125-million facelift to make it more inclusive as it hosts the Paralympic Games this week. The opening ceremony will take place later today, with the lighting of the cauldron set to be the centrepiece of the event. The flame that will ignite the cauldron made its way across France in a series of events before arriving in Paris. 12 torches were spread across the Île-de-France, with officials asking communities and spectators to get behind the Paralympics. Once the Games get underway, there will be 549 gold medal events. Sabrina Ng reports.
Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said if riots can happen in the UK -- which is amongst the best governed countries -- they can happen anywhere, including Singapore. He said factors like weak law enforcement, allowing hate speech and poor immigration control, lead to lawlessness and riots. The first round of retrenchments at the Singapore Turf Club (STC) has kicked off. 90 of its staff will be ex-employees by April 2025. In the interim, most of them have been busy taking upskilling or reskilling courses to prepare for new roles. STC will also be holding two job fairs in September exclusively for its over 300 employees. Close to 2,000 jobs across the hospitality, healthcare and government sectors will be available. Pakistan's struggle with terrorism and political instability have slowed the progress of development projects related to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), even as China pours billions of dollars into the cash-strapped country. A person was found dead after a fire outside a flat at Block 107 Potong Pasir Avenue 1 on Aug 28. The fire was put out by members of the public before SCDF officers arrived and the person was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to contain an mpox outbreak that has spread across the country. Health officials say some 600 people have died since the beginning of this year, and more than 17,000 others are suspected to have contracted the disease. Several cases have also been reported in the east of the country where thousands of people displaced by conflict are living in crowded camps. CNA's Chris Ocamringa reports from Kinshasa.
