National Day Rally 2024: Refreshed Singapore Dream needs major reset in policies, attitudes: PM Wong
A refreshed Singapore Dream that allows citizens to be more adventurous, and to thrive and flourish on their own terms. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong lays out what he calls a major reset in policies and attitudes in his first National Day Rally since taking office. For example, more help will be given to Singaporeans to stay competitive, amid economic transformation. A temporary financial support scheme will also be provided to those who are involuntarily unemployed to help them rebound from setbacks. Sabrina Ng and Nadirah Zaidi report.
Here's a look at all the new developments coming up around Marina Bay and new precincts that are coming up. There will be new residential and recreational developments for Nicoll and Kampong Bugis as well as new Housing and Development Board flats at Tanjong Rhu, which is currently made up of private housing. There are also large plots of land for more than 10,000 new homes at Marina South and Marina East. "These can be sustainable and car-lite precincts with cycling networks and pedestrian friendly streets," said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in the National Day Rally on Aug 18. The Singapore Sports School will move to Kallang and new facilities will be built in the area for Team Singapore athletes, said Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his National Day Rally 2024 speech on Aug 18. "We will have new sports science and sports medicine facilities. We will bring together the national training centres for several key sports," he announced. "We will make Kallang a place for all Singaporeans to enjoy sports. You don’t need to be an elite athlete to enjoy the facilities at Kallang," Mr Wong added. The main road running through the Sports Hub will be converted into a pedestrianised community boulevard. The Yun Hai Yao eatery at Northpoint City mall can now resume operations, more than two weeks after it was suspended over a mass food poisoning incident at ByteDance's Singapore office. The Singapore Food Agency lifted the suspension of Yun Hai Yao on Aug 16. Nearly 170 people fell sick from consuming food prepared by the company on Jul 30. Seventeen people were hospitalised. Athletes in niche sports are calling for more support in areas such as funding, raising awareness and more available venues. Seven bus interchanges across Singapore are undergoing enhancements to get additional features to make them more family-friendly and inclusive. Works have started at the one interchange at Ang Mo Kio. Upgrading works at all seven are expected to be completed by 2027.
