More than 40 people took part in Exercise Heartbeat, a counter-terrorism and emergency preparedness exercise that included a simulated suicide bombing and hostage scenario. A new master's programme in Singapore will be the first in the world to teach future healthcare leaders how to navigate climate change. This includes cutting emissions in healthcare settings. The Sustainable Medicine programme by the National University of Singapore was announced at the Singapore pavilion at COP29 in Azerbaijan. The first intake will comprise up to 50 students from next August. Carbon emissions in the healthcare sector are more than that of the aviation and shipping industries combined. Claudia Lim reports.
Non-profit organisations in Asia will get US$5 million to help vulnerable communities adapt to climate change. Social investor network AVPN has set up a fund supporting solutions for food security, managing diseases and early-warning weather systems. The fund was launched at the Singapore pavilion at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference. AVPN said it expects at least 250,000 people are at immediate risk in the next five years, with at least a million more who are vulnerable. Claudia Lim reports from Azerbaijan.
From April 2023 to July 2024, 307 cases of domestic violence have been attended to by a round-the-clock emergency response team since it was first set up. Most of the cases involved spousal violence. The Social and Family Development Ministry said this underscores the need for immediate action when addressing high-risk cases. Mr Martin Chok, Care Corner Singapore's deputy director of family and community service and a member of the Domestic Violence Emergency Response Team (DVERT), shared more on how the social workers are helping victims.
Chinese cities are seeing better air quality. Latest official data shows the first nine months of 2024 coming off better than last year. Air pollution levels have fallen 54% over the past 10 years -- faster than any other country in the world. China declared war on air pollution in 2013. The government cut and moved heavy industries away from big cities, got buildings and households to switch to clean heating, and electrified road transport. The central government invests about $4.2 billion in air pollution control every year. Tan Qiuyi reports.
India's top court has heard a plea on whether it should press on with the enforcement of measures to address toxic smog currently blanketing New Delhi. The capital woke up to the season's worst smog yet, with air pollution in some parts of the city reaching the hazardous category. Authorities have introduced strict anti-pollution measures. Air quality in northern India is known to worsen at this time of the year, as cold winter air traps a toxic mix of dust, emissions and smoke from illegal farm fires. Neha Poonia reports.
