Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Edwin Tong said Singapore has much to learn from the recently-concluded Paris Olympics, such as its use of existing venues to slash carbon footprint and rein in costs. He said these will be especially useful as Singapore is set to host the SEA Games in 2029, along with other major sporting events on the horizon. Alif Amsyar reports.

New measures have been proposed to address severe noise disputes among neighbours. A new Community Relations Unit and mandatory mediation will be part of a new law to be introduced later this year. Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will deliver his first National Day Rally speech this Sunday (Aug 18) from 6.45pm. The speech will be broadcast live on TV, radio and online platforms. Mr Wong will first speak in Malay, followed by Mandarin. His English speech will start at 8pm. In his National Day Message last week, Mr Wong said the government would redouble efforts to keep the cost of living stable for Singaporeans, and strengthen the country's system of social support. A Community Relations Unit will be piloted in Tampines for a year. The group will consist of 15 officers who have experience in law enforcement and basic mediation. They will be able to deploy noise sensors when needed, and can also take statements from residents, enter homes to gather evidence with consent, and issue a direction for residents to attend mediation. They also have the power to give orders to individuals to stop noise nuisance or remove nuisance-causing objects. Claudia Lim reports.

Japan is home to thousands of museums, but shrinking revenue and rising costs are threatening their sustainability. This, despite a record tourism boom. Some are now turning to alternative concepts and strategies.
