Palestinian militant group Hamas confirmed on Wednesday (Jul 31) that its leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an attack in Iran capital Tehran. Hamas described the strike as a severe escalation that would not achieve its goal, saying the assassination would not go unanswered. Simon Frankel Pratt, lecturer of political science at the University of Melbourne, tells CNA’s Asia Now that Haniyeh’s death is “a very big deal" but Hamas likely does not have the capacity to escalate the Gaza war further in retaliation. He also says Haniyeh’s death may turn out to be instrumental in moving forward with a ceasefire. With at least three otter attacks in the past three years, are Singapore's otters getting more aggressive, and why? Their latest victim, David Andrada, was heading home when he was attacked by a gang of otters two weeks ago. The incident left him with gaping wounds on his thigh, calf and finger. He needed a three-hour surgery, around 10 stitches and spent five days in the hospital. CNA's Rebecca Metteo goes on the hunt for Singapore's cute but vicious critters -- the smooth-coated otters.
Singaporeans who wish to take part in clinical trials can now better find out how to do so through a new portal. They can also identify which ones are best suited for them. The portal was launched by the Singapore Clinical Research Institute, amid the growing need for new and innovative healthcare studies. CNA spoke to Associate Professor Danny Soon, executive director at the Singapore Clinical Research Institute, and Ms Nidhi Swarup, a patient advocate who supports clinical trials.
The Cyber Security Agency has warned that the growth of artificial intelligence could enable more sophisticated cyberattacks. In its annual report on the digital landscape in Singapore, the CSA said this is an emerging area of concern, even as overall cyberthreat numbers fell or remained constant. 4,100 phishing attempts were reported last year. CSA found that 13% of the phishing scams it analysed last year were likely generated by AI. These phishing emails typically have fewer grammatical errors, with better sentence structure, flow and reasoning. AI's ability to take on a more authoritative tone makes them more convincing and dangerous.
Singapore will spend up to $900 million on improving the bus network. Residents of new and existing housing estates will get more routes and services over the next eight years. Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat said the changes will cater to the different needs of each town. Public transport subsidies already amount to over $2 billion a year. The additional $900 million will be used to buy new buses, build new infrastructure and support operating costs. Yishun East, Punggol, Tampines North and Toa Payoh East will be the first towns to see changes in the next few months. Charlotte Lim reports.
Global temperatures hit their highest levels in recorded history this week, according to a top climate monitor. In one of the hottest places in America, laws are making matters worse for some grappling with punishing heat. According to the US Department of Labor Statistics, at least 42 workers across all sectors in Texas died from heat exposure between 2011 and 2021 -- the most of any state. Labour groups said the numbers are likely much higher, because some injuries or deaths are classified as something else. Toni Waterman reports.
Japan's nuclear waste is piling up, but it has yet to find a site for its first disposal facility. Screening to assess the suitability of Genkai, a rural town in southern Kyushu, began in June. The entire process to select a permanent disposal site will take some 20 years. At each stage, local authorities have the right to pull out. By undergoing just the first step of screening, the town can receive grants of up to ¥2 billion (US$12.7 million). Nuclear waste needs to be stored at least 300m underground for about 100,000 years, until radioactivity falls to acceptable levels. Michiyo Ishida reports.
