The Traffic Police held an operation targeting vehicles like vans and pick-up trucks, to see if drivers had the right licences. North Korea’s economy grew sharply in 2023 after shrinking for three straight years. According to South Korea’s central bank, GDP in 2023 likely expanded 3.1 per cent in real terms. The Philippine Coast Guard is racing to prevent a massive environmental catastrophe, a day after an oil tanker sank off the northern province of Bataan. The MT Terra Nova sank in rough waters in the early hours of Jul 25 while it was headed for Iloilo City. At least one crew member died. The sinking has resulted in an oil slick stretching several kilometres. But officials say the spill appears to be minimal and is largely from diesel fuel used to power the tanker and not from its cargo of industrial fuel. Buena Bernal reports.
A slew of security issues marred the inaugural day of the Paris Olympics, before the opening ceremony even began. The French high-speed train network was paralysed by malicious attacks, causing delays that affected about 800,000 travellers. Train operator SNCF says vandalism on critical infrastructure on the rail lines, including arson, was to blame. Several train services were diverted to different tracks, but most were cancelled altogether. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal says no suspects have been arrested at this stage and it is too early to pin any blame. The sports minister has condemned the attacks and assured the public the weekend will go on. Ross Cullen reports from Paris.
