This year's National Day heartland celebrations will feature fireworks and family-friendly activities. Singapore residents can now offer their views on suicide and its impact, in a new whole-of-society public consultation on suicide prevention. Led by ground-up group SG Mental Health Matters, Project Hayat or "life" in Malay, will use the data from this research to develop a national suicide prevention strategy. The Health Ministry is looking to increase the cohort intake of nurses. More courses will be offered at three Institutes of Higher Learning in the coming months. The ministry says ensuring a strong local core is key to its recruitment efforts. This was announced at a merit award ceremony which recognised 150 nurses from various sectors. One of them is Chen Dongxia, Senior Nurse Manager at the Major Operating Theatre Group, Singapore General Hospital. The United States and South Korea have signed a joint nuclear strategy to deter and respond to Pyongyang's threats. Meeting on the sidelines of the NATO Summit in Washington, US President Joe Biden told his South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk-yeol that Washington's commitment to deterrence against Pyongyang is backed by the full range of American capabilities, including nuclear.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida is in Germany to hold talks with Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Topping the agenda are economic security and issues related to defence. Mr Scholz visited Tokyo last year for the first high-level intergovernmental talks, when Japan and Germany agreed on a wide range of cooperation. China has urged the Philippines to immediately withdraw personnel and ships, that it says are "illegally" stationed at Sabina Shoal on the Spratly Islands. The Chinese defence ministry also warned Manila to stop "heading down the wrong path". This comes as the Philippines says it will stand its ground in clashes over the South China Sea, despite an agreement last week to de-escalate tensions.
