Trois personnes ont été blessées après qu'un tremblement de terre de magnitude 7,1 a frappé un comté de la préfecture d'Aksu, dans la région autonome ouïgoure du Xinjiang, dans le nord-ouest de la Chine. Le séisme s'est produit à 2h09 du matin, heure locale. Les premiers rapports indiquent que l'épicentre se situe dans une commune du comté de Wushi, une zone montagneuse à la frontière entre la Chine et le Kirghizistan. Plusieurs équipes de secours sont arrivées dans le village proche de l'épicentre, où deux maisons d'habitation et des étables se sont effondrées. L'électricité a été progressivement rétablie dans certaines parties de la région.
