As referências à disputa da Venezuela pela região de Essequibo estão por toda parte na Guiana. A longa disputa se aqueceu nas últimas semanas depois que o presidente da Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, convocou um referendo para consultar os cidadãos do seu país sobre a reivindicação do território, também conhecido como Guayana Essequiba. Segundo as autoridades venezuelanas, os eleitores aprovaram as propostas do governo, que incluem a criação do Estado da Guiana Essequiba como parte do território venezuelano. A Guiana, com 800 mil habitantes, é o único país de fala inglesa da América do Sul. Ela tem uma mistura de culturas, especialmente com descendentes de africanos escravizados e trabalhadores indianos trazidos pelo Reino Unido, do qual foi colônia. Em um encontro, Maduro e o presidente da Guiana, Irfaan Alim concordaram que a disputa deve ser resolvida sem o uso da força. Mas a tensão entre os guianeses continua. A reforma tributária, que há décadas é debatida no país, nunca esteve tão perto de se tornar realidade. Defensores dizem que a proposta vai simplificar a cobrança de tributos e impulsionar o crescimento econômico. Críticos, porém, reclamam que a mudança vai criar o maior imposto sobre consumo do mundo.
