À circonstances exceptionnelles, mesures exceptionnelles : le ministère de la Justice à décidé de s’installer directement dans l’une des plus grandes et anciennes prisons du pays : celle de Poggioreale, la prison des mafieux. "Les 640 accusés, tellement nombreux qu’on a dû les diviser en trois groupes. Tellement dangereux que trois mille carabinieris ont été réquisitionnés pour garder la prison et ses environs" relate d'ailleurs Philippe Pons, le correspondant de l’époque pour le journal Le Monde. Si le procès marque le début d’une lutte d’ampleur contre la mafia napolitaine, Philippe Pons souligne qu’un grand absent fait défaut à l’audience : Raffaele Cutolo, alias le professeur, ou l'Evangile. Il était le père de la Nuova Camorra Organizzata, Nouvelle Camorra, celui qui, à partir de 1979, entreprit de moderniser et de restructurer les bandes traditionnelles de la pègre, celui qui avait entraîné les clans dans une guerre sans merci, responsable de plusieurs centaines de morts dans la région napolitaine. Emprisonné depuis plus de dix ans, le criminel est tellement important qu’il aura droit à un procès, à un jugement rien qu’à lui. Mais quand le journaliste raconte qu’il manque une personne, il a tort, il en manque deux. Il y aussi la sœur aînée de Raffaele, Rosetta Cutolo. Elle s’est fait discrète, parce que c’est ce qu’on lui a toujours demandé de rester à l’abri des regards. C’est elle qui, depuis les années 70 dirige l’organisation de son frère, dans l’ombre de ce dernier. Lui a passé sa vie en prison, elle a été son bras armé à l’extérieur. En cavale depuis 1981, un temps en exil chez les narcotrafiquants sud-américains, elle est recherchée par toutes les polices italiennes et internationales. Rosetta est une sombre énigme qui, pendant longtemps, n’a intéressé personne. La mafia n’a rien à voir avec les femmes, c’est un milieu masculiniste par excellence. Et c’est un principe fondamental pour ces organisations criminelles, articulées autour du respect du père, du chef, autour de valeurs intrinsèquement patriarcales. Il aura donc fallu beaucoup de temps avant que la Justice s’intéresse à elle. Née en 1937 à Ottaviano, une petite commune rurale de la région de Campanie, au pied du Vésuve, dans une famille pauvre et paysanne, Rosa dit Rosetta, n'a rien à voir avec la mafia Camorra, qui est, à l'inverse de la Cosa Nostra en Sicile, urbaine. Les mafias italiennes existent depuis le 19e siècle. Et ce n’est pas par hasard qu’elles se soient implantées en Sicile, en Calabre, en Campanie… ces territoires, qui restent, dans les années 50 et 60, faiblement industrialisés, marqués par la pauvreté. Rosetta entre dans la mafia par l'intermédiaire de son frère, qui commet son premier assassinat en 1964 à 22 ans. D’ailleurs, la légende veut qu’il ait commis ce meurtre pour protéger l’honneur de sa sœur. En vérité, il a déchargé son pistolet sur le frère d'une fillette qu'il a manqué de renverser en voiture. Mais dans la mafia, les femmes servent aussi à donner une image respectable. Son statut évolue à ce moment. C'est à partir du moment où son incarcération commence, que l’épopée des Cutolo débute... Comment Rosetta s'est alors imposée dans ce monde ultra masculin ?
