The Barbados Workers' Union is tonight expressing disappointment and shock over what appears to be a new hiring regime at Sandals Barbados. General Secretary Toni Moore says that following a recent series of layoffs at the Christ Church hotel, about 18 people have since been engaged and are working in the housekeeping department without contracts. They are being labelled as casual workers and paid at a rate of $400 per week. Additionally, she says other workers, being referred to as self-contractors, are working in the laundry and project departments. Ms. Moore is also calling for the Ministry of Labour to have inspectors investigate the allegations and urges the Ministry of Tourism to stop all concessions with immediate effect if the allegations are found to be true. She is also urging the Barbados Tourism and Hotel Association to stop hiding behind claims of seasonal patterns and focus on what is right. Officials at Sandals could not be reached for comment up to news time.
