There’s a new centenarian on the block! On Friday, Ms. Agatha Murray celebrated her 100th birthday with friends and family in fine style and after hearing about the long life, it could be said that achieving this milestone of 100 is even more of a miracle. This, as Ms. Murray recalled that after her birth, her mother was told that her baby would not live. "I was born very sickly when I was small so the people telling my mother to throw me away because I wouldn’t live, but my mother take care of me and I live to this age, thank you very much." One of her friends recalled the moments they shared while giving of their time in ministry to the sick and aged for over 25 years. "Sister Agatha, everything, especially on the first Sunday in December where we used to bring in all our sick and aged members for a lovely Christmas Mass first and Christmas dinner and we give them a hamper. Every first Sunday of the month, you see her how she is dressed there? She would be dressed in white with a white hat and so on and she goes from place to place." The birthday girl was elated to be surrounded by all of her friends and family as she celebrated her 100th year. "Let me tell you all too, I was born in Grenada but I came to Trinidad at 17 years and I love here and I think I am a Trinidadian right now in all ways, because you know why? Trinidad and Tobago Government taking care of me so I have to thank them very much. And I work in hospital for 28 years and I was well treated too so I thank everybody here. I thank the Trinidadians and everybody." At her birthday celebrations, the mother of three, grandmother of 16, and great-grandmother of 25 was also honoured by the Minister of Social Development and Family Services, Donna Cox, through the Ministry’s National Centenarian Programme. She was given a cake, hampers, and a certificate from the Ministry to mark the milestone achievement. Minister Cox told her, "And it says certificate of honour and achievement and this certificate is presented to Agatha Agnes Murray born November 8th, 1924 in recognition of your valuable contribution to Trinidad and Tobago, signed by me and the Permanent Secretary, and this is for you." Turning 100 is no easy achievement, some might even say it’s golden, which made the final presentation of a gold medal most fitting for the centenarian’s birthday. Minister Cox reminded those at the birthday celebrations to register their family members. "You know I want to tell you all too that if you know anyone from 95 up please register with the Ministry, register with the Ministry of Social Development and Family Services. Some of us will have family members or even neighbours and so on, please register because we want to celebrate." It’s evident that Agatha Murray made it against all odds. Many have shared that that their diet, lifestyle, and even their relationship with God helped them to reach the age of 100. Perhaps for Ms. Murray, it could have also been the time she gave in her younger years to assist the sick and the elderly that added some more days to her life calendar.
The Borough of Point Fortin is reassuring residents and visitors alike that a combined effort is being made by the TTPS and Municipal Police to guarantee a comfortable shopping experience for the Christmas season and beyond. On Friday, law enforcement officials conducted a walkabout within the business community, hoping to reassure them that they are well protected in all in their endeavours and that the people who traverse the Point Fortin community will be able to shop in comfort. Sergeant Smith of the Point Fortin Police Station noted the busy time of year for citizens. "This is the yuletide season coming November to December, our Christmas period, where we will have an influx of persons shopping and traversing in the Point Fortin district. We take this opportunity to engage them, to create a partnership, a continued partnership with our stakeholders to reinforce and create target hardening. We also create a proper information gathering system where we can be able to respond in a timely manner with our business community, our burgesses." MP for Point Fortin, Kennedy Richards Junior, said this all-stakeholder approach has proven itself before. "I think the first time we would have had this walk through the community would have been about 12 months ago, give or take 11, 12 months ago, and it worked out well that we would have had a very safe Christmas season. We would have had a very safe Carnival here in Point Fortin and it's growing. And so we see the benefits of staying in touch with the burgesses, staying in touch with the business community and we hope that this could now lend to an even greater and successful yuletide season for the business community in Point Fortin." With the new highway to Point Fortin, MP Richards is hoping it will convert to more shoppers this Christmas, noting that while Point Fortin may be lot smaller than the mainstream business hubs, this is what makes it so special. "The highway is there, it's created access to Point Fortin so we hope that they can leave Port of Spain and come down to Point Fortin and shop. We hope that they leave Chaguanas, we hope that they leave Sangre Grande, we hope that they leave San Fernando and come to Point Fortin and shop." Mayor Clyde James went further to make this prediction: "This is going to be one of our best Christmases in a long time and I hope that we all have a wonderful time."
Over 300 students of the St. Peter’s Private Primary School in Pointe-a-Pierre took a stand against violence through their school’s walkathon on Saturday. From as early as 6am, the students gathered at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella to begin the walk which ended at the school’s compound. The event was done under the theme, “Say No to Violence.” Principal Georgette Medford said the objective of the walk is in keeping with the Ministry of Education's Say No To Violence directive, which is a mandate for activities every term across the Academic Year. "So this is our first activity for Say No To Violence Day to commemorate that day, and it's our biggest activity. The other activities across the two terms are going to be held in school where we plan to have a no bullying zone, which is actually going to be constructed next week, as well as an art exhibition and a poetry competition where we will display and showcase our students' work." The Principal was elated to see so many of the students and their families turn out for the event. She said these events enforce the values, attitudes, and behaviours that many would like to see in society. "You know they say school is a microcosm of society so we have to start taking our role seriously as that secondary institution for training and growing our children in the way that we want them to grow so that they become productive citizens of our twin island." She encouraged other schools to do their part to change the narrative. " I want to throw a challenge out to all the educators across Trinidad and Tobago, and dare I say the world, to following in our footsteps. I know many schools would have done it already and I'm just throwing out a challenge. Let us make our students the fine examples that we want our citizens to be." The International Day Against Violence And Bullying At School was commemorated on November 7th.
The Scarborough General Hospital is now officially an accredited Baby-Friendly Hospital. After commencing the process to becoming a BFHI-recognised facility in 2022, the SGH attained the status in June 2024 and on Friday, the commemorative plaque was unveiled. According to health officials, there are four hospitals in Trinidad and Tobago that have met the global standards for the Baby Friendly Hospital accreditation, with Tobago now joining the ranks. Tobago Regional Health Authority Breastfeeding Coordinator Debra Cook-Warner, who led the team which made this possible, admitted it was not an easy task. "The results of two internal assessments qualified us for international external assessment by PAHO officials attaining more than 90 percent in all areas of the ten steps to successful breastfeeding. Today, the Tobago Regional Health Authority can boast of an initiation of breastfeeding rate of above 85 percent. It used to be 16 percent." National Breastfeeding Coordinator Debra Thomas said this accreditation process has improved the standard of service offered at the hospital. "The BFHI became the catalyst for change in the obstetrics and neonatal department and the care offered to pregnant women and mothers became more dignified. Pregnant women were taught what to expect in pregnancy and delivery, and were able to make informed decisions about how to meet the nutritional needs of their babies." PAHO/WHO Country Representative, Dr. Gabriel Vivas Francesconi, noted that the Pan American Health Organization played an integral role in the accreditation training which has numerous opportunities for national development. "Having our hospitals achieve the BFHI status are a crucial success factor if we are to achieve the World Health Assembly global target of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months to at least 50 percent by 2025." THA Secretary of Health, Dr. Faith B Yisreal, stressed that the Scarborough General Hospital must be a family friendly facility. She said there has been a reduction in the birth rate in Tobago and so the Tobago House of Assembly is planning to roll out a programme where families of newborns will receive support. "Having a baby box which we will give not only to do the babies born on Christmas and New Year’s, but to the babies who are born in our facility - all of them." The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is an international accreditation that was launched in 1991 by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund, with the goal of protecting and promoting breastfeeding in facilities that provide maternity services.
