Barbados will be giving praise as it celebrates its 58th anniversary with a National Independence Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, November 24. The multi-faith service, being held in conjunction with Barbados religious community, starts at 10 a.m., at Garfield Sobers Sports Complex in Wildey. It will be held under the theme, 'Stronger Together with Peace, Love and Unity'. Senator Patricia Parris of the organising committee says the service is open to the public and she has extended an invitation to all Barbadians to attend. Cricket Legends of Barbados and the University of the West Indies have inked a memorandum of understanding to bring together the history of the game with cultural values. The formal partnership is an agreement with the Academy, CLR James Cricket Centre at UWI, and the Legends. Speaking during a ceremony this week, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Cave Hill Campus Professor R. Clive Landis, is hoping for more participation for the Legends in Cricket in the Caribbean. General Manager of Cricket Legends, Julia Caine, says the MOU will help to improve general knowledge and education on cricket in the region and its impact. There are no headaches for Head Coach Kent Hall in selecting his first team, as the Barbados Senior Men's Team prepares to face Guyana at the BFA Turf tomorrow night. Both teams are set to clash in home and away CONCACAF Nations League play-in matches. The home side is boosted with the return of international striker Thierry Gale, and Coach Hall says the Tridents are excited at the prospect of adding to their recent success in Nations League "C". Both teams will be battling it out for a place in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup Prelims, slated for early next year. Interim Head Coach of the Guyana side, Wayne Dover, says the transition of the coaching position has brought plans back in order, and the team is more focused. Next year's local track and field season is set to get going in late January with the 15th edition of the Joseph Payne Memorial Athletics Classic. The discus and javelin field events will start the ball rolling on January 24, under lights at the Coleridge and Parry School from 5 p.m. This precedes the next day's full schedule of track and field events at the Usain Bolt Complex, which includes the 5k run set for 5 p.m. Opened to all clubs, schools and independent athletes, for the first time it will be a qualifier for the CARIFTA Games, having been sanctioned by the Athletics Association of Barbados. The organiser of the Classic, Charles Walcott, says this is an important move as our young athletes need more competition. Added to this year's track events will be a mixed relay and as we hear from meet Director Wendy Barrow-Smith, there will also be an expansion of the age groups. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the United States and the National Security Ministry to establish ‘Vetted’ Units, free from rogue elements within the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). At a Political Rally in July 2023, Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley announced that, "Where the American Government has undertaken and we have agreed to accept it to create within our Police Service, what we call Vetted Units." The Prime Minister explained the benefit this would have to ensure fewer corrupt police elements. "One of the problems that we have is that there are too many criminals in the police service, so when they're going after the non police criminals, they have their friends in the police service to tip them off and we have to have vetted units. And I'm telling this country that we are prepared to pay extra to police officers in those Vetted Units if they will maintain their integrity." At a Signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Thursday, Special Agent in Charge of the Caribbean Division of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, Denise Foster, said the Memorandum of Understanding is a step towards strengthening the relationship with the TTPS, providing training, mentorship and working closely to address trans national criminal organisations operating throughout the Caribbean. "We work with the Trinidad (and Tobago) Police Department or Police Service to identify those members of this Unit. And there is a process, so it will take some time, but again we have been working together already and we have been for 20 years. So this is just a, this is another step forward." Ms. Foster said the US has worked with several other countries in establishing such units successfully. "We're establishing one here. We've had units for years in Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Peru. So there's many different countries that we've been successful and to be clear, we are it's an opportunity for us to work together and just to provide resources and it's a collaborative effort. You know the Police Department, they have been you know working and addressing crime for many, many years. So we are just another piece of the puzzle." She pointed out that there are plans to establish these units in the region. "I think the entire Caribbean is benefiting from it. We are part of the US as part of the Caribbean Community. So we are all benefiting. Its not just us benefiting, its the entire Caribbean benefiting from this. Just like Trinidad and Tobago is benefiting from it, we're addressing the violence and the crime in the region." Following the signing of the MOU, National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds said the establishment of a Vetted Unit will enable local law enforcement to have access to advanced equipment and training; as well as enhanced operational partnerships with their DEA counterparts. And US Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago, Candace Bond, said the United States’ assistance in establishing this vetted unit will empower Trinidad and Tobago law enforcement to operate in partnership with U.S. security agencies at an unprecedented level of professionalism and expertise. The Ministry of National Security said it envisioned that this new “Vetted Unit” will enhance T&T’s ability to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in criminal activities that threaten the stability and security of the region. It added that the Unit will identify targets, collect evidence, share intelligence, and facilitate prosecutions through both the US judicial system and in Trinidad and Tobago. The US Embassy said this collaboration emerged from the July 2023 visit to Port of Spain of US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, and a congressional delegation led by Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, as well as Prime Minister Rowley’s subsequent visit to Washington in January 2024.

In the aftermath of severe flooding across South Trinidad, residents have started the clean-up process even while many areas still grapple with the damage left behind by days of rainfall this week. Raffick Baksh of Katwaroo Trace in Penal and his family were engaged in their clean-up when they spoke to TTT News. "Water all inside as you could see mud all about all meh doors and everything swell up already with that water. Every year we does have this same problem and when yuh talk, when yuh ask for a lil help, nobody doesn’t want to give you no help, and the fridge, well everything here we jack it up, still water does hit it. Right now one of the fridge kinda down because water hit everything." Sahadeo Ganpat of Clarke Road in Penal said he and his neighbours deal with the issue of flooding annually. "Apparently I live in almost the lowest area and every time the rains fall, we got a lot of flood in my area here. Downstairs in my bedroom I have almost two feet of water right now, presently right now, flooding in the kitchen, living room, dining room, right through. Right now I have a real problem with that." Homeowners in South are working tirelessly to clear their homes of debris, mud, and silt deposited by floodwaters as well as waterlogged furniture, damaged appliances, and belongings that couldn’t be salvaged.
