Barbadians are heading to healthcare providers and pharmacies in their numbers seeking relief from respiratory illnesses. Chief Medical Officer Dr. the Most Honourable Kenneth George says there is a slight uptick in respiratory illnesses on the island. However, he says this is completely normal at this time of the year and there is no flu outbreak in Barbados. Dr. George is advising Barbadians that there are ways to protect themselves from comig down with these illnesses. And the Chief Medical Officer also responded to concerns being raised nationally, which suggest there is an outbreak of respiratory illness in china involving various viruses, including human metapneumovirus. He says Barbados has received no reports from the Pan American Health Organisation or the World Health Organisation to support the claims of an unsual increase in respiratory illness in China. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service is calling their crime-fighting activities following the declaration of the State of Emergency a success. Speaking at a Press Conference held at the TTPS Headquarters in Port of Spain, Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin said he is satisfied with the dedication his officers are showing since the State of Emergency was declared on December 30th 2024. He said 473 operations have been conducted to date. As a result of these operations, the DCP said 503 priority offenders have been targeted, 2,495 searches have been conducted with 360 persons arrested. He also mentioned over 900 traffic offences were detected in 321 traffic operations. Additionally, 22 firearms and over 800 assorted ammunition were recovered. Several quantities of dangerous drugs were also seized. He said his officers remain focussed as they deal with eliminating this country's criminal elements even after the State of Emergency is over. The DCP said the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force continues to assist the Police as part of the joint effort. DCP Benjamin thanked members of the public for working with the Police during this time.

Victims of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) may no longer have to constantly relive the emotional trauma while seeking assistance to overcome the pain experienced. This, as the Office of the Prime Minister – Gender and Child Affairs Unit officially unveiled the ‘Umbono System,’ aimed at capturing real-time data on activities and incidents related to Gender-Based Violence. ‘Umbono’ is a web-based application that was designed in-house by the Information and Communication Technologies Unit of the Office of the Prime Minister to capture real-time data on activities and incidents related to Gender-Based Violence locally, allowing First Responders from various State Agencies and Civil Society Organisations to input data. Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister - Gender and Child Affairs, Ayanna Webster-Roy, said it is a major step forward. "It allows us to oversee the entire care continuum, guiding victims of Gender-Based Violence or domestic violence from distress to a state of improved well-being." She said the system is more than just one to input data but to reduce re-traumatisation for victims. "And because many organisations would use the same system, we reduce the chance of our clients being re-traumatised along that journey. Remember the story I shared about that former victim, having to retell the story, having to relive pain and hurt? Hopefully, this system will give another survivor a better chance to navigate through what is required to emerge better." Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, Kurt Meyer, said the system has been active for about three months and has already shown its effectiveness. "We were actually able to identify a perpetrator of domestic violence, a repeat offender, and with the help of TTPS, we were able to provide targeted information, and after leading the TTPS on the merry dance, they were finally able to catch up with the individual, and right now he's assisting the police with their enquiries." Minister Webster-Roy said the effectiveness of the system relies on the input of data from State Agencies and civil society. "We need you to make this work. Without you inputting the data, without you ensuring that you put it in a timely manner, ensuring that what you put in is correct, the system wouldn't work. It wouldn't work the way it was intended to work." Calls logged through the system are also tagged geographically, allowing users to get critical data that could lead to policy decisions.

The Minister of Health, Terrence Deyalsingh, and the Ministry of Health team are actively monitoring the spread of the Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) in China. The Ministry on Wednesday said it consulted with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and confirmed surveillance data from the China CDC for the week of December 23rd to 29th, which shows a rise in acute respiratory infections including seasonal influenza, hMPV, rhinovirus, and adenovirus. On January 2nd, the Ministry contacted the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and also confirmed there is no State of Emergency declared by the country. However, the Ministry of Health is reminding the population that the influenza vaccine is free of charge at all Health Centres across the country. With the Carnival season upon us, pregnant women, the elderly, immunocompromised persons, and those with chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) are encouraged to get the influenza vaccine.

Angry representatives of the differently-abled community protested in Port of Spain on Wednesday. They are calling for an improvement in the quality of housing conditions for the local disabled community. The Differently-Abled Movement, representing thousands of visually-impaired, physically-challenged, and other members of the local differently-abled community, voiced their dissatisfaction with their living conditions in front of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development's Head Office on Wednesday morning. Head of the Movement, Nikesha Pierre, said the group has had many meetings over the years with several officials, but with no improvement. "We fully intend to continue our protest strong and firm. We will go on until our needs and our pleas are being heard and addressed. We, the differently-abled persons, are also citizens and stakeholders of this country. We have rights, and we deserve better." Another representative, Ornella Sammy, called for a reassessment of the $2,000 Disability Grant. "A fair and immediate increase in housing allocation for differently-abled persons. Five percent is unacceptable. We demand at least 15% of housing be reserved for our community." Managing Director of the Housing Development Corporation, Jayselle MacFarlane, said she noticed the protesters and decided to leave her office to speak with them. "As a matter of fact, our Minister, the Honourable Camille Robinson-Regis, while we build units for… we more or less refocus and have units available for the differently-abled and the five percent of persons can apply for those units." Ms. MacFarlane encouraged the protesters to come to her office for a meeting and promised to address their concerns.

Squatting remains a major issue in Trinidad and Tobago. This was disclosed by the Chief Executive Officer at the Land Settlement Agency, Hazar Hosein, during a Public Accounts Committee Meeting of the Parliament on Wednesday. Squatting has been on the radar since the 1998 State Land Regularisation of Tenure Act, which invited applications for regularisation. Despite about 23,000 applications for Certificates of Comfort, today, the estimated number of squatting families has more than doubled. Mr. Hosein said one of the weaknesses of the LSA has been a lack of containment legislation to deal with further squatting. The Agency submitted its recommendations for amendments to the legislation in 2017. "As of this date, we probably have in the vicinity of 60,000 families who are now squatting. With respect to the legislation, in 2014, there was a cabinet decision with respect to, based on recommendations to change the legislation and to amend certain features of the legislation, both in terms of the State Land Act and the State Land Regularisation of Tenure Act. And an ad hoc committee was formed to look at that. And in 2017, the recommendations were made. And as we reliably inform us before the LRC and as of as late as two months ago, there was a sitting of the LRC to consider this." The proposed changes include redefining State Land boundaries, delegating more authority to the Land Settlement Agency, and transitioning from criminal to civil penalties for squatting. "Another significant change would be the review of the offences to deal with squatting. Right now, squatting is treated as a criminal act. The offences are very minimal. What we have suggested is that squatting be treated as a civil offence, and there be fines for different levels of squatting. For the first time, repeat offenders, et cetera. And we have suggested fines for that." Last on their list of recommendations is empowering the LSA through the Act, with the authority to conduct containment activities. The legislation is currently before the LSA Legislative Review Committee. The issue was first raised in 2008 to 2009 to a Public Accounts Committee.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs has noted the media reports of the increased respiratory viruses circulating in China that have led to overwhelmed hospital systems and crematories. The respiratory cases reported are due to Influenza A, Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Mycoplasma pneumonia and COVID-19. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention has not submitted official reports to date. The Caribbean region and Saint Lucia are presently in the typical flu season with notable increases in respiratory illnesses among the population. We are also experiencing peak travel and visitor influx. We note increases in Influenza A, cases of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID19 variants. The Ministry of Health is closely monitoring the situation and focused on strengthening national capacity and response for the potential respiratory pandemic by increasing the disease surveillance system and local capacity to detect and manage cases. Testing for HMPV is presently available through the Caribbean Public Health Agency Medical Microbiology Laboratory (CMML).
