The Barbados Port Inc. is moving to generate electricity from waste collected. This is to be done through the replacement of its decommissioned incinerator with a waste to energy facility. The project will cost 40 million dollars and will be funded with assistance from the Inter-American Development Bank. According to the port's Divisional Manager of Innovation and Corporate Service, Captain Karl Branch, this project will be implemented over the next two years, with a mobile solution to deal with waste to be established in April. He explains that as one of the countries engaged in home porting, there must be provisions for receiving waste under the international regulations, which will be used along with port waste to produce the electricity. Captain Branch was speaking during a town hall meeting to discuss the environmental and social impact assessment for installation of the facility. Meanwhile, Divisional Manager of Operations Ian Stewart says pyrolysis and gasification were investigated before deciding on incineration as the best option. As the invasive millipede continues to be the topic of widespread discussion, Barbadians are being reminded that they must go through the right protocol when bringing plants and other agricultural products into the island. According to Acting Chief Agricultural Officer Michael James, the protocols are necessary and mandatory to prevent the entry of invasive species, which may become a pest of agricultural importance. He made the appeal today during a press conference to update the public about the red millipede, which he says came to Barbados through the movement of agricultural products. And while there is much information floating around Barbados about the red millipede, Mr. James says it is crucial that invasive species are accurately identified. This week, the Ministry of Agriculture released a guide providing various methods for controlling and preventing millipedes from entering residences, utilising both natural and insecticidal approaches. The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) continues to be on high alert at all police stations during the ongoing State of Emergency (SOE). At Friday's Police Media Briefing, Deputy Commissioner of Police Junior Benjamin highlighted a significant marijuana seizure worth over $1 million within the last 24 hours, along with major busts in Tobago and the Northern Division. He said since the SOE began on December 30th, 2024, the TTPS has conducted 562 operations, leading to 500 arrests and 585 priority offenders targeted, the seizure of 30 firearms, 937 rounds of ammunition, and 106.7 kilogrammes of marijuana. He added that over 416 traffic operations were conducted, identifying 179 offences. "I want to take the opportunity to also highlight that over the past 24 hours, we have had over a million dollars worth of marijuana seized by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. I can state to this point that the TTPS, the Tobago Division, has done well in that they have had a seizure of 11.1 kilogrammes of marijuana, and also a substantial amount was also seized in the Northern, North Division." He said the work of the police and the Defence Force continues this weekend. "We are going to continue working hard and assiduous over the weekend, so we are asking persons, even as you travel and traverse the streets, please, we ask you to have some patience with us. If you see roadblocks, we are going to be there, and we're going to be doing our jobs as we seek to ensure that we create a safe place as we seek to uphold law and order." Assistant Commissioner of Police Administration and Operational Support, Richard Smith, said part of the TTPS' operations includes the recovery of four stolen vehicles in the Princes Town district during intelligence-led operations. These included two K2700 pickups, two H100 pickups, and other vehicle parts. "Now these vehicles are currently lodged at the San Fernando Police Station, and I'm encouraging persons who have lost their vehicles to proceed to the San Fernando Police Station and meet with ASP Phillip as well as Inspector Wilkinson, who would be able to show them these vehicles, and they would be in a position to identify them if they are theirs. Any documents that you might have as it relates to your vehicles, please work with them so that they will be able to assist the officers in identifying these vehicles." In response to questions about gang-related activities, DCP Benjamin confirmed that one individual remains under house arrest as part of the SOE’s measures. The TTPS reassured the public that mechanisms are in place to monitor individuals under house arrest to prevent them from orchestrating criminal activities. ACP Smith also noted a steady flow of officers returning from vacation leave, emphasising the need for "all hands on deck" during the SOE.

Residents in the Blanchisseuse area now have greater access to primary health care services as the North Central Regional Health Authority opened a new multi-million dollar facility there on Friday. Member of Parliament for Arima and Minister of Planning and Development, Pennelope Beckles, cut the ribbon to open the Blanchisseuse Disaster Response Site and Non-Communicable Disease Prevention and Retreat Centre on Friday. "This facility, as a public sector investment programme, cost almost $3 million, and the facility is expected to provide services including an ante-natal clinic, chronic disease clinic, phlebotomy, family planning, dressing, school health, public immunisation, and pap smear." Also on hand for the event, Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh applauded the region's health care professionals for their quality of work. "The vision for the health sector is not only to build these wonderful facilities, but you know what is even more important, what goes on inside these facilities. People will tell you that hospitals like Arima are probably one of the best hospitals to be in because of the level of service and compassion that you get there." The Health Minister encouraged people to get vaccinated for influenza as he noted that in 2024, eight people died from the virus. "We urge the population to get vaccinated against influenza. Starting tomorrow at mass vaccination sites like the Paddock, Divali Nagar, and a couple of others, but all health centres have it. Get vaccinated against influenza." The new medical facility is located next door to the community's health centre and will also provide dental screening, mental health consultations, and other services.

Minister of Planning and Development and Member of Parliament for Arima, Pennelope Beckles-Robinson, has addressed questions about ongoing developments within the People's National Movement. Speaking with the media following the opening of the NCRHA's Blanchisseuse Disaster Response Site, Minister Beckles-Robinson emphasised that the party remains focused on unity and preserving its legacy. "Well, I can't say what will happen tomorrow, but, I mean, the important thing is that, as a party, you know, the focus is on maintaining the party, a party that is more than 60 years old. It's not anything unusual. I mean, there was Minister Young and myself, and one of the important things, as persons who have been in politics a very long time, especially myself, you know, my commitment is to the party." The Minister said that the party comes first, and pursuing leadership within the party is normal. "I have challenged the leadership before. I got the opportunity again to serve in the Cabinet, so we understand that, you know, things like that happen, but the critical thing is that, as somebody who has served a very long time, started off in Local Government, for me, the party always comes first. So, we discussed the things that we discussed yesterday, and we all look forward to tomorrow's General Council meeting, and the outcome."

Pan Trinbago has been allocated $2,420,000 to distribute to 149 Unsponsored Steelbands for Panorama 2025. The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts held the Cheque Distribution on Friday in keeping with the Government’s commitment to provide funding to the steelpan fraternity. In December 2024, Cabinet approved increased funding for Unsponsored Steelbands and Steelpan players. For Single Pan Bands, Grant funding has increased from $7,500 to $10,000 per band while Grant funding for Conventional Bands has increased from $15,000 to $20,000 per band. Additionally, the per-player allocation has increased from $500 to $800. Speaking at the official Cheque Disbursement Ceremony, Minister Randall Mitchell said by providing this financial assistance, the Government ensures that every band, regardless of their sponsorship status, can take the stage with pride and deliver performances that uplift our nation.

Discrimination exists in various forms in both the private and public sectors. In order to address these concerns, a Joint Select Committee has been established with the participation of the Equal Opportunity Commission, the Joint Trade Union Movement (JTUM), the Trinidad and Tobago Coalition of Services Industries (TTCSI), the Ministries of Labour and Public Administration, and the Office of the Prime Minister - Gender and Child Affairs Division (OPM GCA), all of whom have conducted various forms of research on discrimination. According to the Senior Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist at the OPM GCA, Makandal Caesar, due to operational segregation within occupational grouping, there may be several positions occupied by persons of different sexes. "You come in as a clerk and don't have all the prerequisites to be a clerk, you may start at the lowest point in that range and work your way up to the highest point in that range. But it doesn't mean that someone as a clerk in the public service, if you are female, would receive a lower pay than if you are male." However, Second Vice President of the Trinidad and Tobago National Nursing Association and representative of the Joint Trade Union Movement, Sharon Lakhan-King, said their research suggests the existence of disparities between male-dominated services versus female-dominated services, including salaries and academic qualifications. "In the female-dominated nursing service, we have 3-4 years' training to become a nurse; for teachers as well, the same 4 years of training, whereas for our male-dominated services, it's more or less 6 months' training to enter the service." Director of Legal Services at the EOC, Haran Ramkaransingh, is encouraging persons to not see gender discrimination as purely a man discriminating against a woman, but whether there is gender equality for both. "Normally when we think of sex discrimination, we think about, for example, is a woman being paid less than a man for doing the same job, but I just also want to draw to your attention that it can work both ways. There were cases from the United Kingdom where, with respect to retirement ages, for example, if a woman was allowed to retire at 60 but a man had to work until 65, that was held to be sex discrimination against a man." Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Labour, Claudelle McKellar, reiterated that her Ministry remains committed to fulfilling its mandate of providing decent work to all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and gender parity, leading to their continued engagement in dialogue with their social partners.
