WASHINGTON, D.C. - The fate of TikTok's operations in the United States now rests with the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments on Friday in a case that could have far-reaching consequences for both national security and free speech. Observers say the court seems likely to uphold a law that would ban TikTok in the U.S. unless the popular social media program is sold by its China-based parent company. At the center of the case is a recent law requiring ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese parent company, to divest its U.S. operations by January 19, or face a nationwide ban. The Biden administration supports the law, arguing that it is necessary to protect American user data and prevent potential manipulation of content by the Chinese regime.
