Students from nine primary schools will get the opportunity to showcase their skills in coding and robotics. This is because the Barbados Light and Power has partnered with the Ministry of Education to launch its inaugural Battle of the Bots competition. The competition includes students from Blackman & Gollop, Arthur Smith, Christ Church Girls, St. Christopher, St. Lawrence, Ellerton, Sharon, West Terrace and Milton Lynch Primary Schools. The showcase is set to highlight skills learnt over the last three years, and culminates on July 1 at the Wildey Gymnasium. Chief Education Officer Dr. Ramona Archer-Bradshaw underscored the importance of students utilising technology, as early as at the nursery school level, in an ever-evolving world. Already, over 300 teachers have been taught in coding and robotics using the VEX GO robotics kits. Additionally, BL&P's Managing Director Roger Blackman says coding and robotics will result in the creation of new teaching methods, curricula, and hands-on experiences that engage students. He adds he was excited to partner with the Ministry when he was approached about the competition, as he too has an interest in robotics, and looks forward to future installations.
