'This war must stop, Palestinian right to self-determination must be recognised’: UN Chief

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized the need for the United States to increase pressure on Israel to end its war on Gaza, highlighting the UN's limited power to halt the conflict but stressing its consistent calls for an immediate stop to the violence and recognition of Palestinian suffering and their right to self-determination. Guterres criticized the failure of the UN Security Council to address major conflicts like those in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine, blaming the geopolitical divide among global powers for enabling nations and movements to act with impunity. He also referenced the International Court of Justice’s ruling that the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem is illegal, calling for an end to the occupation, and rejected any annexation of the West Bank, illegal settlements, or land grabs, reaffirming that the future Palestinian state must include the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem.
