140 women, girls on average killed every day in 2023 by partner or relative: UN
Globally, more than 50,000 women and girls were killed in 2023 by an intimate partner or family member, according to two UN agencies on Monday, in a report that coincides with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Raphaelle Rafin, a policy specialist with UN Women, says violence against women is a ‘systemic issue’ and that the murders are 'often brutal.' Also, in Canada, the Ontario NDP called on the provincial government to declare an epidemic of intimate partner violence. For anyone affected by family or intimate partner violence, there is support available through crisis lines and local support services. If you’re in immediate danger or fear for your safety or that of others around you, please call 911. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/health-promotion/stop-family-violence/services.html 0:00 - International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women 0:20 - UN: 140 women, girls on average killed every day in 2023 by partner or relative 7:14 - Ontario NDP called on the provincial government to declare an epidemic of intimate partner violence »»» Subscribe to CBC News to watch more videos: http://bit.ly/1RreYWS Connect with CBC News Online: For breaking news, video, audio and in-depth coverage: http://bit.ly/1Z0m6iX Follow CBC News on TikTok: https://bit.ly/3TnHioe Follow CBC News on Twitter: http://bit.ly/1sA5P9H Find CBC News on Facebook: http://bit.ly/1WjG36m Follow CBC News on Instagram: http://bit.ly/1Z0iE7O Subscribe to CBC News on Snapchat: https://bit.ly/3leaWsr Download the CBC News app for iOS: http://apple.co/25mpsUz Download the CBC News app for Android: http://bit.ly/1XxuozZ »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» For more than 80 years, CBC News has been the source Canadians turn to, to keep them informed about their communities, their country and their world.
