200-foot Alabama radio tower stolen, baffling employees

Radio station employees in Alabama are baffled by a question they never thought they would have to ask: How does someone steal a 200-foot-tall radio tower? According to a statement from the WJLX radio station in Jasper, Ala., a landscaping crew discovered the steel AM tower was missing on Feb. 2 when they visited the wooded site for a routine clean-up of the property. "I've tried all weekend to figure it out, and I just can't. I've been in the radio business around it all my life and then been in it for 26 years professionally, and I can say, I've never heard of anything like this, and this one, I've seen it all now," said WJLX General Manager Brett Elmore. The tower, which supports antennas for the radio station’s broadcasting, was nowhere in sight. The station’s AM transmitter, a device that sends signals to the radio tower, was also stolen from a nearby building, which had been vandalized.
