The growth rate of 17.7%, increasing from 576 to 678 ventures in 2021, mirrors the expansion observed from 2019 to 2017, marking a 17.3% surge in active ventures. Overall, the number of fintech startups in Africa has soared by 125.2% from 2017 to 2023. This growth is widespread across the continent, with all major markets, except South Africa, witnessing an upswing in active ventures. Particularly noteworthy are the remarkable expansions in Egypt and Nigeria, where the number of fintech companies has surged by 66.7% and 50%, respectively, in the last two years.
