2024 sugar harvest to start next month
Preparations for the start of this year's sugar cane harvest are almost complete, with grinding expected to start some time next month. Word of this from Minister of Agriculture, Food and Nutritional Security Indar Weir. There were expectations that the 2024 sugar cane crop would have started this month. However Minister Weir told CBC News that the engineers have been working steadfastly undertaking some last minute preparations with regards to the placement of the factory boilers among other things. He says he is awaiting a report from the factory engineers in this respect and hopefully he will then be in a better position to speak more definitively on the matter. Minister Weir says talks with the Barbados Workers Union regarding wages and other monetary matters are still ongoing, however this is not a matter which according to him should inhibit the harvesting process.
