Convenience store brand 7-Eleven is “subject of a takeover offer” from a Canadian-based operator, says Sky News Business editor Ross Greenwood. “7-Eleven, which was created and owned in Japan, has 85,000 stores in 20 countries around the world – only last year the parent company paid $1.1 billion to take over the Australian 7-Eleven franchise, from the long-time owners, the Withers and the Barlow families,” Mr Greenwood said. “The $56 billion offer comes from Canadian retailer Couche Tard, which has around 10,000 sites in North America. If successful, it would be the biggest foreign takeover of any Japanese company. “7-Eleven's owner says no decision has been made of whether to accept or reject the offer.”
