In Santa Monica, the land where the Viceroy Hotel now sits used to be owned by Silas White, a Black entrepreneur in the 1950s. White purchased the land in 1957, hoping to build the Ebony Beach Club for the local Black community to gather and socialize. But one year later, the city took the property through eminent domain. Now the group that launched "Justice for Bruce's Beach" is now involved, and it wants a land return and compensation for the White family. In response, the City of Santa Monica says it's "actively seeking appropriate and realistic remedies."
