Activists spray paint on Finnish parliament building | ABS-CBN News

Activists from Swedish and Finnish environmental organizations on Wednesday sprayed red paint on the Finnish parliament building to demand political action against a Finnish company mining peat in Sweden. Eight people from the Finnish climate movement ”Elokapina” and Sweden’s “Restore Wetlands” sprayed the pillars of the building in central Helsinki to draw attention to Finnish state-owned Neova mining peat in Sweden. In a statement they said it was hypocritical that the Finnish state received large European Union grants to, among other things, phase out their own peat mining while at the same time moving some operations to Sweden. Peat forms in wetlands over thousands of years and stores large amounts of carbon which is released when it is laid dry.
