Al-Assad’s regime ‘permeated every single person’s fibre of being’: Analysis
Syrian opposition fighters have announced on state television that the rule of President Bashar al-Assad has come to an end after 13 years of civil war. It came just hours after fighters entered the capital Damascus. The opposition says Assad has now fled the capital. Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr has the latest from Damascus. Arwa Damon, president and founder of the International Network for Aid, Relief, and Assistance (INARA), says Syrians “were hopeful and had their hope crushed” for 14 years. “What we are seeing right now is completely different, and there is no doubt in anyone’s mind that the era of al-Assad is finished,” Damon, who is half Syrian and extensively covered the civil war in the country as a journalist in the past, told Al Jazeera in Doha.
