Amsterdam unrest: Police detain at least 6 for defying protest ban after soccer clashes
Tensions remain high in Amsterdam, since violent clashes before and after a soccer match between Israel's Maccabi Tel Aviv and local team Ajax last week. Following the violence, local authorities imposed a protest ban until Thursday morning. Dutch police detained several people on Tuesday for defying the protest ban, according to reports. A police spokesperson confirmed media reports that six people had been detained. On Monday evening, riot police arrested several people after a tram at a square in west Amsterdam caught fire, reportedly after fireworks were thrown at it. No injuries were reported, though the windows of the tram were shattered. Local police have said visiting Israeli fans were attacked on Thursday night, and that the fans had burned a Palestinian flag and used sticks, pipes and rocks in clashes, which Reuters verified through footage.
